In many ways, we live in a battery-driven society. From our cell phones, laptops and other electronic devices to children's toys and cars, modern life runs on batteries. But they're not just used in consumer goods. When storms knock out the power grid, batteries keep hospital equipment working and trains running. If you have a landline, you can still make and receive calls because batteries power the phone lines. But batteries can seriously damage the environment—and human health—if not disposed of properly.
How Batteries Work
Before the battery was invented, power
generation required a direct connection with a source of electricity. That's
because electricity cannot be stored. Batteries work by converting chemical
energy into electrical energy. The opposite ends of a battery—the anode and the
cathode—create an electrical circuit with the help of chemicals called electrolytes
that send electrical energy to a device such as a cell phone when the device is
plugged into the battery.
Batteries and the
Environment
The exact combination and number of chemicals
inside a battery vary with the type of battery, but the list includes cadmium,
lead, mercury, nickel, lithium and electrolytes. When thrown in the household
trash, batteries end up in landfills. As the battery casing corrodes, chemicals
leach into the soil and make their way into our water supply. Eventually they
reach the ocean. Also, lithium in batteries reacts in a volatile way when
exposed. According to Battery University, lithium can cause landfill fires that
can burn underground for years. This releases toxic chemicals into the air,
which increases the potential for human exposure.
Batteries and Human Health
According to the Agency for Toxic Substances
& Disease Registry, cadmium and nickel are known human carcinogens. Lead
has been linked to birth defects and to neurological and developmental damage.
Mercury is also highly toxic, especially in vapor form, which is why the
government banned its use in batteries in 1996. Negligible amounts of mercury
traceable to other materials used in the manufacture of batteries may still
occur, but they don't present a threat to human health.
How To Recycle Batteries
Rechargeable batteries contain dangerous heavy metals and should always be recycled. New cell phones are usually packaged with mailers so that consumers can return their old phones for recycling. National recycling programs like Call2Recycle (listed in the Resource section), accept used rechargeable batteries as a public service. Lead-acid batteries, the kind used in cars, can be recycled through local or state hazardous waste programs. Most automotive supply stores will accept old car batteries to send to the proper recycling authorities. Single-use alkaline batteries used to contain large amounts of mercury, but since the 1996 federal law banning mercury in batteries, they are now considered safe to throw in the trash. It's still a good idea to recycle alkaline batteries, but since they are not considered hazardous waste it can be challenging to find recycling programs that accept them. Sometimes your local municipal recycling service will take them. Another option is to recycle them in bulk. Big Green Box (listed in the Resource section) allows you to do that.

Exercises for basketball players should be designed to improve the skills needed specifically for the sport. Basketball is tough. It requires players to run, jump, slide, backpedal and even dive to make a play. The sport's requirements are so extensive that setting up an exercise program for basketball players actually gives you a lot of freedom to incorporate a number of different types of exercise.
Types of Exercises for
Basketball Players
To develop well-rounded players, you'll
need to plan well-rounded exercise routines. Include each of these types of
exercises for basketball players into your workout plan each week.
Endurance
Training
If you've ever watched a game of basketball, you probably realize there's a lot of running involved in the sport. Not only do athletes have to sprint back and forth across the court, they have to maintain enough endurance conditioning to be able to play the entire game. Incorporating interval endurance exercise into a basketball player's routine will prepare her for the game. One way to do this is to have the players jog around the court 20 to 30 times, sprinting the length of the court, then jogging the width.
Speed
Training
When there's a fast break situation taking
place, your players need to be able to sprint down the court as fast as they
can. Speed training will prepare them for these situations. You can have them
run "horses" for time, or you can plan drills that mimic real-life
fast breaks. For instance, you could start two offensive players at half-court,
and a defensive player behind them at the free throw line. When you say
"go," the offensive players begin running toward the opposite basket
and the defensive player has to try to catch up to the offensive players,
sprinting as fast as she can to stop the easy bucket.
Plyometric
Training
Basketball players have to jump in order to
rebound, shoot and intercept a poorly thrown pass. The faster and higher your
players can jump, the better they'll be able to play. Incorporate plyometric
jumping exercises into your practices to help them improve their skills. You
can add real-life drills into your practices, like rebounding drills where the
players practice jumping off both feet to retrieve the ball, or you can set up
cone stations, where players jump back and forth over cones to improve their
jumping speed.
In addition to lower body plyometric training, you can also perform upper body plyometric training. Like lower body training, upper body plyometric exercises will help improve the strength and power of your player's arms, chest and back. You can add upper body plyometric exercises by incorporating medicine ball throws into your practice or performing "up/down" exercises that require the players to explosively move from a pushup position to a standing or jumping position.
Agility
Training
Basketball players slide, backpedal and
change direction on a dime. You want to prepare your players to perform these
motions in a coordinated fashion. At the start of every practice, incorporate a
series of warm-ups that involve bounding, sliding, backpedaling, skipping and
sprinting back and forth across the court. Then, add game-like exercises like
crossover dribbles, defensive slides and going for a loose ball.
Strength
Training
You want your players to remain strong
throughout the season. Strength training will help players hold their ground
when fighting for position under the basket. Incorporate at least eight to 10
strength training exercises with your athletes two to three times a week. When
possible, avoid performing strength training exercises the day before or the
day of a game. When you plan the workout, be sure to incorporate compound
movements that target multiple muscle groups like squats, lunges, pushups,
pull-ups and deadlifts. Round out the routine with abdominal work and isolation
exercises like planks, hamstring curls and shoulder presses.
Planning Your Exercise
Routine
It may seem like there are too many different types of exercises to be able to plan a well-balanced routine. Luckily, most of the exercises for basketball players can be easily incorporated into a normal basketball practice. If you practice five days a week, plan on incorporating strength training for 20 minutes, two or three days a week, then spend the rest of your practice time alternating between exercises and drills designed to enhance the other elements of a basketball players' skills.

Each generation of the Apple iPhonebrought something new to the table and the biggest innovation with the iPhone 4S in 2011 was the introduction of the Siri voice assistant. Since then, Siri has continually been updated to add more features.
What Can Apple Siri Do?
Siri is fully integrated into the iPhone from version iOS 5 onward. It can also be used with an Apple Watch, all editions of the iPad from 3 on, any iPad mini and versions of the iPod touch from 5th generation on. It can do many of the things you would do on your iPhone without having to type, open any specific app, or go through any menus. With Siri, just begin speaking. Siri then interprets your voice input and responds accordingly.
Practical
Uses of Siri
Some of the most useful Siri functions include the following:
Make a phone call: You can ask Siri to dial a number for you by the name of the person in your contact list. You can also ask it to initiate a FaceTime video call.
Look up information: Siri can look up nearly anything available on the Internet, including movie listings, store phone numbers, and the local weather.
Create calendar events: Give Siri a basic command to create a new calendar entry. You can also ask Siri to play reminders for you, set timers and alarms.
Play music: Siri integrates with Apple Music so rather than searching for a song, you can tell Siri what to play and she will respond.
Get directions: You could ask, "How do I drive from here to Madison Square Gardens in New York?" Siri would then direct you to the Maps app and provide the suitable driving directions.
Send a message: Siri works with both iMessage and email. Simply dictate your message using speech-to-text.
Make reservations: Siri integrates with OpenTable, so it's possible to say something like, "Siri, reserve a table for two at The Western Crab Bake at 6 p.m. tomorrow."
Get recommendations: Siri can understand natural language and infer information you need. If you tell Siri, "I feel like watching an action movie tonight," it can look up movie showtimes and you can buy tickets. Ask for local restaurants and relevant information from the Internet will be relayed.
Open an app: Siri will open any app on your iPhone by request.
Manage your smart home: Siri can integrate with HomeKit-enabled accessories to turn on lights, change the temperature and work your security system.
Send a payment: Using the Apple Pay app, Siri can send money to anyone in your contact list.
What
Languages Does Siri Speak?
Siri can be set to work with 21 languages with localization for 36 different countries. You can also use it to translate phrases from English to other languages.
Compared to Other Digital Assistants
The most popular digital assistants currently are Apple's Siri, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
Questions
and Answers
One review of these three assistants asked them a series of 20 questions on various subjects. Though Siri's ability to find information is good, it gave the least reliable answers compared to Alexa and Google. Google came out on top in a similar review asking over 4,000 questions while Siri performed the worst.
Music
Services
All three assistants work best if you to subscribe to their specific services: Apple Music for Siri, Amazon Music for Alexa and Google Play Music for Google Assistant. Both Alexa and Google can be used to play home speakers from several companies, but Siri only works with the Apple HomePod. Google connected speakers can also recognize different voices while Siri and Alexa cannot. The updated Siri from 2017 can function as a DJ playing music based on general requests.
Home
Entertainment
Google Assistant and Alexa work with many third-party systems, as well as control actual TVs with Amazon Fire and Google Chromecast devices. Siri can handle playing media via AirPlay, but it cannot control a device such as turning it on.
Communication
Skills
Siri generally fares better in terms of
communication, because it allows you to make calls and send text messages, as
well as emails. You can call or text anyone with another Alexa device as well
as call anyone in your contacts. You cannot make international or emergency
calls with Google Assistant and Alexa, nor can you send emails like you can
with Siri.
Third
Party Support
Siri integrates with a much smaller number of third-party services compared to Alexa and Google, which can be linked to thousands of third-party apps.
Choose
Your Ecosystem
Your choice of digital assistant should be based on the products you use the most. If you use Google software and services heavily, you will gravitate toward Google Assistant. The same is true with Amazon and Alexa, which integrates better with third party services. If you are a diehard Apple user, Siri may be a better option.
Making Life More Convenient
At the end of the day, Siri on iPhone doesn't do anything that you couldn't do without Siri. The key selling point is that it's meant to make life simpler and more convenient.

As they have become ubiquitous in just about every aspect of everyday life, it is interesting to consider how cell phones have helped businesses grow. Remember that mobile phones have only become mainstream devices in the last couple of decades; in this very short amount of time, they have had a tremendous impact on society at large.
Five Ways Cell Phones Have Helped Businesses
Grow
When cell phones first emerged on the scene,
they were relatively expensive to purchase and even more expensive to maintain.
The monthly plans were quite costly, considering the relatively few number of
minutes that users were able to get for that amount of money. These days,
however, mobile phones offer much more than just voice calls. In addition to
impacting the lives of everyday people, it is interesting to consider how cell
phones have helped businesses grow in the last ten or twenty years.
Out of
Office Communication
Before there were mobile phones, workers who
left the office would effectively not be able to communicate with the office
unless they found a pay phone or borrowed the telephone at a neighboring
business. Even then, the office would not be able to reach the employee unless
he or she had a pager or some other similar device. This is terribly
inconvenient.
However, with the rising adoption of company
cell phones, employees can stay in touch with the office no matter where they
happen to be. They could be at a business meeting across town or at a
conference across the country; they're still reachable. This makes it
infinitely more useful for the office, as quick questions can be quickly
answered at will. It also means that customers can be more easily reached (and
they can more easily reach the specific employee), helping to accelerate the
growth of any given business.
Mobile
Professionals on the Go
Perhaps even more profound is the impact that
cell phones have had on professionals who are always on the go. From TV repair
technicians to shuttle bus operators, mobile phones have allowed them to be
accessible to whoever needs to contact them. If you have an appointment with a
plumber and then you suddenly realize you wont' be home later in the day, you
can call him and tell him to come back another day. This is even bigger for
professionals like real estate agents.
Social
Media Promotions
More recently, society has seen a greater
adoption of smartphones, as well as the rising popularity of social media. When
you look at how cell phones have helped businesses grow, you can consider
social networks like Foursquare. People are advertising where they are (for
free), helping to promote the businesses that they are visiting. These
"check-ins" add to the brand presence and brand awareness, helping
businesses reach an increasingly large customer base.
Spawning
Tangential Businesses
Just as how the automotive industry helped to grow businesses related to car repair, car rental, and gasoline, the same kind of phenomenon happened with mobile phones. As more cell phones filtered into the market, a greater need emerged for cell phone cases, cell phone headsets, cell phone charms, and other cell phone accessories. Related businesses like cell phone unlocking services, cell phone repair, cell phone rental, and so forth also grew tremendously.
Smartphone
Applications
The rise of smartphones has also given rise to smartphone applications. These have huge potential for growing businesses as well. Consider the UrbanSpoon app as an example. If someone is out and about, looking for an interesting place to have dinner, he can take out his iPhone, launch the UrbanSpoon app, and find a nearby restaurant. This restaurant may not have otherwise attracted this particular customer had he not had access to such a mobile application.
Looking
Toward the Future
Success in business is heavily related to
taking advantage of opportunities. Mobile phones may not be directly related to
the business of running a financial institution, but you can be sure that cell
phones have impacted that industry. Looking to the future, many other
innovations could lead to even greater growth and an even stronger economy.
Furniture for small spaces should be practical, useful, multi-functional, and appropriately sized. While this concept may seem overly simplistic, homeowners often try to cram too many furniture pieces into a small room. While you want some smaller-sized furniture, you also want a few larger pieces to keep the room from appearing as a miniature-sized room. Balance and contrast are the keys to making a successful small room design.
How to Choose the Right
Furniture
If you live in a space-challenged home or
apartment, or have a small room in your home that always seems to negate rather
than attract visitors, then it is time to look at your furnishings and
accessories. Make certain that each piece of furniture in your room is useful
and fits naturally into your overall room design. For example, you may have a
small floral arrangement on a side table when a larger one would create greater
interest and intrigue in your room decor.
There is a plethora of furniture for small
spaces on the market, and some pieces can be inexpensive so you won't break
your budget in creating a nice look for your room. Be sure to mix small, medium
and a couple of larger pieces of furniture in your room design.
Small
Bedroom Decorating
The bedroom is one of the most important
rooms in your house, so you want it to be a comfortable haven. You want to be
able to walk around your bed. Too large a bed will make your room appear
smaller than it is. Maya Ben, Vice President of Hollandia International
Operations advises shoppers to, "Look for comfort and support as in a bed,
not just a comfortable sofa for sitting. We see many shoppers looking for a
nice comfortable sofa, but overlook the comfort of the mattress."
Some bed choices include:
The Platinum Lux™ Groove looks like a lounge chair but is a highly sophisticated adjustable bed.
Murphy beds can offer additional storage and work space when the bed is not in use.
Daybeds can be plain, have under-bed storage or a trundle bed.
Chelsea Loftbed adds floor space with a desk, vanity and book shelves underneath the bed.
Ottoman beds are easy to open and comfortable for guests.
Ben agrees that an ottoman bed is an
excellent space saving choice, "Because of its small footprint, it is a
must-have for maximizing small spaces and is widely popular among apartment
dwellers looking to do just that."
Other space-saving bedroom furniture
options include wall mounted furniture and accessories:
Install a floating shelf by your bed instead of a bedside table.
Wall mounted bedside lamps conserve space.
Wall-mounted televisions can also have adjustable positions.
Office
When designing a home office, storage and filing cabinets are your most important considerations. Make certain that your desk offers the most bang for your buck.
Regalia Secretary Desk offers surprising storage with a pull-down shelf for your laptop, shelf, drawer and lower cabinet with adjustable shelf.
Sauder Corner Desk tucks away in the corner as an ideal space saver with one drawer and two bottom bookshelves.
Dining
Room
You might have the luxury of a separate
dining room or a dining nook, so make the most of it with a drop-leaf dining
table.
Drop leaf tables can be collapsed when not in use.
Stackable chairs are a great way to save space.
Coffee table with four ottomans is compact and functional.
Living
Room
Perhaps you live in a studio, or a one
bedroom apartment. Maybe you live in an older house with smaller rooms.
Whatever the reason you are looking for furniture that goes well with small
spaces, you are certain to have some questions about how to properly furnish a
living room.
Loveseats can be used instead of sofas, but aren't limited to small streamlined furniture.
Chair choices range from side chairs to overstuffed upholstered chairs.
Sectional sofas are great ways to have a chair, chaise lounge and other separated configurations.
A Few Important Rules
There are a few rules to consider when
designing small spaces.
Don't be afraid of color! Opt
for pale or bright colors for your walls and fabrics.
Darker hues will make your room
appear smaller.
Use white as an accent color or
backdrop for vivid color splashes.
Select lightweight fabrics. You
can also mix with heavier fabrics to add contrast.
Choose furniture with hidden
storage compartments to organize and reduce clutter.
Think vertical. Hang draperies
higher than windows and take advantage of the illusion of height.
Floating shelves are excellent
space savers and provide additional storage.
Don't overcrowd your room.
Leave enough space to easily move around.
Myths About Small Room
Design
In the past, many designers advised using only neutral colors and scaled-to-size furniture for small space design, but design styles have changed. You aren't limited to tiny pieces of furniture or dull colors for small rooms. Dramatic colors, expressive fabric patterns and prints can be used. Your fabric choices, floor and window treatments can help your room burst to life! Mix and match shapes and sizes to create contrast and a better room design.

Tracing a mobile phone location can give you peace of mind, especially if you have teenagers, or anyone else you'd like to be able to keep tabs on! You don't need a GPS-enabled phone if you have a cell phone tracking program through your service provider. That makes tracking anyone on your family plan easy. However, if you're worried about being tracked by a mere acquaintance, your ex, or a stranger who came across your phone number, you're protected.
Services for Tracing a Mobile Phone Location
There are a few ways to use mobile phones to trace the locations of those you want to "watch." You can opt for a family plan, which is good if you have teenagers or a spouse you'd like to keep tabs on. Not only that, but if you're a business owner and have traveling employees, this type of service will be helpful for keeping track of where they - and critical shipments - are.
Another option is a social networking solution
where users broadcast their locations to their friends. This gives the seeker
less control because it's easy for the cell phone user to turn off the service
that allows them to be found.
Family
Plans
AT&T has a plan called FamilyMap that allows users to locate any other cell phones on their family plan using a PC or their own mobile phone. You won't be able to do it discreetly, however, because the other cell phone user will receive texts alerting them to the fact that they are being watched. You can track the location via an online map (real time) or receive texts of your own with location updates. The price varies based on how many phones are on the plan and uses GPS technology to locate the cell phones.
Sprint has a similar plan called Sprint Family Locator. There is a free 15-day trial period and an accompanying Android app to help you locate your kids from your phone.
Verizon also has a Family Locator program where the app must be downloaded onto every phone you want to locate. There is an Android app to receive arrival and departure updates for each family member, as well as to create scheduled location updates.
Social
Networking
Take things up a notch from social networking methods like Facebook and Twitter. Allow your friends to find you by locating your cell phone. You're in control of your security settings with these, so you can hide from everyone or be detectable by only a few friends.
Google Latitude: With this service, you can share your location with whomever you wish. When you don't want to be found, simply turn off Google Latitude. You will also be able to see your friends' locations either on your phone or your computer.
Foursquare: This is another social networking service based on location, but users have to actively "check in" to each venue that they visit. This information is then shared with friends at the discretion of the user.
Smartphone
Apps
All kinds of apps are available to smartphones
these days and GPS tracking is no exception.
GPS Tracker by InstaMapper is available for the Apple iPhone and Google Android. It is a free real-time GPS tracking service, including the ability to record tracks for later analysis. Up to 100,000 positions can be recorded for each device and a map of your current location can be embedded on nearly any webpage.
GPS Tracking Pro is an Android app offered by Family Safety Production. The free app lets you track family or friends in real-time using GPS technology. It is also available for iPhone or for a standalone GPS locator device.
Turning Your Phone into a GPS Device
You can do even more than trace a mobile phone location. When you turn your phone into a GPS device using tools like those from AccuTracking, you can:
Find out where your phone is
Find out which direction it is
headed
Get a text message alert when the
driver goes over the speed limit or leaves a designated area
If your cell phone and service provider are
compatible with the service, you have to load software onto your mobile phone
first. You can then trace where your phone is on an online map. The phone will
have to be in the network area; if it is outside, it will not show up on your
online map.
Privacy and Security
Does the idea of tracing a mobile phone
location make you nervous because you're afraid someone who means you harm may
be able to track you down? Take comfort in this: if someone isn't already on
your cell phone plan, it should be next to impossible for them to acquire the
information they need to trace your mobile phone location and find you - unless
you choose to allow them into a social network that you use to share your
location.
Legal Protection
According to I.C.U. Tracer Services, it has been "illegal to sell, transfer, or possess confidential phone records" since President Bush signed off on the H.R. 4709 The Telephone Records and Privacy Protection Act of 2006 on January 12, 2007.
On a
cold Tuesday night in Perth's northern suburbs, Alistair McMurdo gathers his
team.
"If the door closes, don't force your
way through," he tells the Northern Redbacks Women's Soccer Club's under
16s side.
"Be comfortable on the ball. Keep
possession and start again."
It is half-time in a scratch match and the
team is leading one-nil.
But McMurdo is clear on what he wants to
see in the second half.
"It's like a team of ghosts out there.
There's only one or two who are doing the talking," he explains
Competition expected to be tough
The Redbacks are preparing for the biggest
tournament of their short careers when they travel to Gothenburg in Sweden to
play in the Gothia Cup later this month.
It is billed as the World Youth Cup and
features 1,700 teams, both male and female, from 80 countries across multiple
age groups.
"We've had a little bit of insight,
and delved into the background of some of the teams that are going to be
there," McMurdo said.
They have previous history of this
tournament and know what to expect."
The Redbacks are the first girls' side from
Western Australia to compete at the tournament since its inception in 1975.
"It's such a privilege to be part of a
team, and have the opportunity to go to Sweden," captain Grace Monteiro
said.
"I expect, as captain, hard work and
dedication from the team."
Chance to be spotted by scouts
The Redbacks will begin their campaign
against two Swedish teams and a side from the United States — countries with
strong women's football programs.
Despite being used to winning, as seven
trophies in the past three years illustrate, they are not expecting too much of
themselves.
"They are capable girls' teams that
are going to be hard to compete against, but hopefully we produce a win at some
stage," Monteiro said.
"I expect the American team to have a
great skill level."
McMurdo sees the tournament as an
opportunity for his players to experience a different style of soccer, as well
as to perform under the eye of professional scouts.
The Redbacks boast Matildas legend and record goal scorer Lisa De Vanna amongst their alumni, and the tournament could be the perfect stage for the next generation to showcase their skills.
"We've got two senior girls going, who
are a year older, who may wish to turn professional, and there may be somebody
there just to watch them," McMurdo said.
Soccer superstars among previous competitors
The tournament has been running for 44
years and over that time almost a million players from 146 countries have taken
part.
Those players include some of the game's
biggest stars.
England and Premier League legend Alan
Shearer and Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic are just two who played at the
Gothia Cup.
Zlatan is a great player. So going to a
tournament that he has been to potentially means one of our girls could be an
international player at some stage," Monteiro said.
"It makes the tournament bigger."
