The source of much public debate, the issue of whether to allow children and teens to bring their mobile phones to school has been discussed and debated at length across the country. Even now, there is no clear-cut answer or conclusion. There are many arguments against allowing cell phones in the classroom.

Distractions

When a child is in school, his or her purpose there is to learn. Young people can be easily distracted from their studies - and having easy access to a mobile phone during class can make it easier for them to lose focus. According to a 2010 study from Pew Research Center, 64% of students say they have texted in class and 25% have made or taken a call. And it's not just talking to others. That same study noted that 46% of students play games and 23% access social networks on their phone at any time. If they become bored with the class material, it doesn't take much for them to take their cell phone to play some games or to check their news feed on Facebook or Twitter. How can you expect a child or teen to absorb the knowledge they need to learn if they're not even paying attention?

Cheating

Obviously, kids won't be able to take out their cell phones and talk to one another in the classroom during an exam, but the concept of "passing notes" has stepped into the age of technology, thanks to text messaging. Texts can be sent quite discreetly while in the classroom. Taking it one step further, a student can excuse himself to go to the washroom, only to use that time to send text messages about important questions.

It's also important to bear in mind that cell phones are advancing and improving faster than ever. Smartphones can surf the web, providing high-tech ways for students to look for test answers online. Some models have advanced calculators, and depending on the software, may even be able to run custom applications that can contribute to academic dishonesty. Just to look at the statistics, a study from The Benenson Strategy Group in 2009 stated that 35% of students have used cell phones to cheat. Additionally, 41% of students admit to storing notes on phones to use during tests and 46% of teens admitted to texting friends about answers. The possibilities for cheating and copying are literally limitless when students have access to cell phones in class.

Theft

Cell phone theft is a problem in America with 3.1 million cellphones being stolen in 2013, according to Consumer Reports. Now add still developing brains, hormones and social status to the mix, and you can have the perfect combination for stealing if a particular individual brings an especially expensive cell phone to school. The last thing you want to do is to tempt the would-be thieves by sending your child to school with a piece of equipment that make him or her a target. Lockers are more likely to be broken into, for example, if they know there is something of value in there.

Illicit Pictures

Kids will be kids, so with hormones raging during their school days, there is a distinct possibility that some students may take pictures or videos that they shouldn't be taking. Given that nearly every cell phone these days has a built-in digital camera, it becomes too easy to take a picture of someone without the person even noticing. These photos are also easily uploaded and shared over the Internet, social media or texted to friends. All it takes is a simple Google search to see news stories of teenagers expelled or suspended for distributing illicit pictures of others like these students in Shakopee Public Schools. Can you imagine the uproar if pictures were to arise of girls in the dressing room or boys in the locker room?

Cyberbullying

Along the same lines, cell phones also make it easier to cyberbully, which is when a person uses electronic communication to intimidate, threaten or humiliate a person. Not only can cell phones make it easier for rumors to spread like wildfire through the school with a simple click of a button, but students can also send mean or hurtful texts to students and post inappropriate pictures of students.

Data from the Cyberbullying Research in 2016 showed that 33.8% of students have been bullied in their lifetime, 11.9% have been threated through a cell phone text and 11.1% have had a hurtful image of them posted. In addition, a whopping 25.7% have had one or more different types of cyberbullying done to them. With cell phones readily available in schools, cyberbullying can become a lot easier to accomplish.

Socioeconomic Diversity

Cell phones can easily become seen as status symbols among students. In some schools, it is the more privileged kids that own cell phones or that have the latest phone on the market. This can lead to envy and cause socioeconomic diversity among students. Those with lower-end phones or no phones at all often become jealous and resentful. Those with the higher-end phones can show them off and look down on those who don't have the latest phone.

Inappropriate Material

Cell phones are becoming more and more advanced mini computers that allow students to access material at the click of the screen. While most schools have filters and regulations to block out inappropriate material, with 48% of students looking up unsuitable sites, they can find a way around this. This coupled with larger classrooms can make access to inappropriate material easier. Now imagine students texting that material to other students. Pretty soon, it will be everywhere.

Target for Predators

Many students use the internet or access social media sites without teacher or parent supervision. These students can be targeted by predators. Predators lurk in chat rooms, on social media sites and other websites that are of interest to students. With the use of smartphones and other devices, it can be hard to monitor a student's online activity.

Harmful Physical Effects

The EPA has regulations that discourage too much exposure to technology and allowing students to have cell phones in school can increase their screen time during the day. Cell phones give off a low level of non-ionizing radiation for which the long-term effects at low levels are still being studied. However, allowing students to use their cell phones during school adds to their exposure to this radiation, which can in turn have increased harmful effects on the developing bodies and minds of teenagers.

The Other Side of the Story

Realize that cell phones are not necessarily a bad thing for students to have and carry to school. Just as there are a number of cons to allowing cell phones to be used in school, there also a number of pros too. Parents can decide if a phone is appropriate for their child and set guidelines on how they want it to be used. Many schools also have set rules on whether cell phones are permitted or not so it is best to check with the school's specific policy before sending your child in with a cell phone.

NF: Your chair's backrest should provide support from your lower back up to your shoulder blades. Many chairs also provide lumbar support -- this arches the lower part of the chair out to support the natural curve of your spine. Height-adjustable backrests are another available option on some chairs, letting you customize the fit to the contours of your individual body.

Selecting a New Office Chair

LTK: What are the most important features to look for when selecting a new office chair?

NF: Look for chairs that can conform to your body and adapt to changing tasks. In addition, look for chairs with multiple features and points of adjustability including seat height, back height, 360 degree swivel, back tilt, arm height, tilt tension and casters. Make sure the seat is large enough to accommodate frequent changes in position and support an even distribution of your weight.

You should also consider a seat with a "waterfall edge" that slopes in the front. This type of seat promotes better leg circulation by comfortably supporting your thighs and leaving no pressure behind the knees. Additionally, look for chairs with armrests that support your arms, while allowing your neck and shoulders to feel relaxed.

Adjustable armrests are another great feature as they can be raised and lowered to the optimal position for your individual body. In addition, many people opt for padded armrests for extra comfort.

LTK: Is ergonomics an important factor to consider when selecting an office chair?

NF: Yes! Stress on the back is increased 40 to 90 percent when sitting. Selecting an ergonomic chair is therefore a key factor to consider when purchasing an office chair. Ergonomically correct chairs play an important role in one's posture and put less stress on the body, allowing individuals to be productive for longer periods of time.

LTK: Are there any features to avoid when shopping for a new office chair?

NF: Almost all features that are available in office chairs serve a purpose. The key is to focus on the features that best fit your needs. Most important is making sure that the chair you select can adjust to the natural contours of your body, providing maximum comfort and support while sitting.

Narrowing Down Your Choices

LTK: How can an individual tell if a particular office chair is a good "fit"?

NF: An individual can tell if a particular office chair is a good "fit" if the chair naturally conforms to his or her body. An individual's backrest should be positioned in a way that suits his or her tasks and allows the seatback to lock into this position. The contoured backrest of the chair should also match the natural contour of an individual's spine.

LTK: What are the signs that a particular chair is not a good choice?

NF: Signs that a particular chair is not the right choice for you include: finding yourself hunching your back, craning your neck, or straining your wrists while typing or moving your mouse. A chair is not a good choice when it does not naturally conform to your body, often resulting in discomfort or pain.

Setting Up Your Work Space

LTK: What tips can you share for setting up your office chair for maximum comfort and safety?

NF: When you get settled in your chair, the best seated position is not an erect 90 degrees, but rather a reclined posture of 100 to 110 degrees. Keep your feet flat on the floor or resting on a footrest if needed, and avoid craning your neck or hunching your shoulders. Try to keep your lower arms at right angles or slightly more open, resting on your chair's armrests, so that your wrists are straight when using the keyboard. Armrests provide relief to your shoulders, but they should not be used for typing.

You can also adjust your chair to promote correct posture. For instance, adjust your chair's arms to make your own lower arms level with the desktop. This way you can use the keyboard and mouse comfortably and without straining. Make sure that you don't have too much lumbar support in your lower back -- too much lumbar will reduce the support to your upper back.

Seat depth should be adjusted so you can place a clenched fist between the edge of the chair's seat pad and the back of your knee. Make sure your thighs fit comfortably under your desk or keyboard tray, and adjust tilt tension on your chair to suit your weight.

The Marmot Mavericks line is a great option for recreational campers. The line features bags rated to 20, 30 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so you can select the option that works best for the climate where you will be camping. Shoebuy sent me a Marmot Mavericks 30 bag to try, so I can say firsthand that it is well-suited for tent camping in a campground environment in mild weather conditions. I found the bag to be comfortable and roomy.

A Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA.com) forum user indicates being comfortable in the same bag I tried with temperatures in the 30s, and said that it was actually fine in the 20s when sleeping in sweats. A Backpacker.com review of the Marmot 20 model confirmed comfort in low temperatures along the Appalachian Trail, as well as indicated that the bag "rebuffed heavy condensation on five wet nights."

2. Slumberjack Country Squire 20

Out of more than 70 general purpose camping bags tested, Outdoor Gear Lab awarded its Editors' Choice distinction to the Slumberjack Country Squire 20. Rated to 20 degrees Fahrenheit, this bag was the "widest and longest bag tested" by Outdoor Gear Lab, and it was determined to also be the "most comfortable" and "impressively warm." The reviewers found that the bag is roomy enough for two people on its own, but if you have two of the same bags you can zip them together for even more room.

Selected as an Outdoor Gear Lab Best Buy among backpacking sleeping bags, this model has some of the benefits of more pricey backpacking bags without the hefty price tag.

Outdoor Gear Lab's reviewers describe the bag as an "excellent value." They particularly like the bag's draft collar. They note that this bag isn't as warm (or light) as many other 20 degree bags - but for moderate camping, that really doesn't matter.

Backpacking Light recommends this bag for budget-minded campers, stating, "You could buy a bag that weighs a pound less and lofts better, but it would cost you roughly three times as much."

4. Deuter Starlight EXP (for Kids)

If you camp with children, it's important to get a quality, right-size sleeping bag for the youngsters in your party. KidProject.org blog names the Deuter Starlight EXP sleeping bag as the "best all-around sleeping bag" for kids. The reviewer states that they have used it with kids between the ages of four and ten, and that it works well to keep them warm in moderately cool temperatures - and particularly like that fact that it is designed to grow with your children. It is designed for children from 4'3" to 5'6".

In a Seattle Backpacker's Magazine review, the bag is given five stars after testing it with a three year old. The reviewer said, "Surprisingly, the bag did better than any of the others we had packed for the entire family" on a camping trip where the temperatures were in the 40s.

Quality is important for all sleeping bags, but most especially for those who will camp in extreme conditions. Scales states, "When you are looking for a high-quality sleeping bag, you want to ensure you're choosing a top brand in this category - especially if you're going to be in extreme conditions." He explains, "Temperature ratings are very useful when you're deciding what high-quality bag to choose. If you're looking at a style that does not include a temperature rating, you're most likely not looking at a high quality bag." He also points out, "A serious camping bag should have some sort of head cover and a snugger fit."

1. Feathered Friends Hummingbird 20

Outdoor Gear Labs selected the Feathered Friends Hummingbird 20 as Editors' Choice for backpacking sleeping bags tested out of a total of 30 models tested. Reviewers stated that this bag is the "best lightweight hooded bag tested" and particularly liked the fact that it comes in multiple sizes (regular and long) to allow backcountry campers to get the best possible fit.

As it is rated only to 20 degrees Fahrenheit, Outdoor Gear Labs recommends the bag for three season camping.

Professional mountain photographer, author and mountaineering enthusiast based out of the French Alps Alexandre Buisse lists Western Mountaineering's Alpinlite as his sleeping bag of choice on his website. He states, "It's only rated to -7C , but that should be enough for summer climbs when sleeping fully clothed. The weight compromise makes it worth it." (-7C is equivalent to 20 degrees Fahrenheit).

A TrailGroove.com review points out that Western Mountaineering bags are widely recognized for their quality and that this bag "doesn't disappoint."

They noted that the fabric is able to "breathe so well that the 20-below bag stays comfortable to 20 above." This bag is a great winter bag, especially for climbers and other who enjoy camping in the mountains during the snowy season and those who combine camping and winter hunting.

The blogger who writes GearCaster.com used the sleeping bag on a December and January trip across several of the coldest states in the U.S. with positive results. Even sleeping in the car with the windows up, which resulted in significant condensation, the sleeping bag provided warmth and stayed dry. A review on ActiveGearReview.com describes this bag as "a great value."

Seasonal Considerations

Those who camp year-round may need more than one sleeping bag, depending on personal preferences and temperature extremes. Scales states, "If your climate does not vary significantly, one bag could work, but if you are camping through true seasons, you likely will want to arm yourself with bags that will ensure you are getting a comfortable night's rest."

He points out, "With a little extra thermal layering of clothes, you may find that the bag you use in the fall and spring is still a good choice for you in the colder temperatures of the winter. That said, a bag that is designed for 20 or 0 degree conditions is likely not the right fit for a camper enjoying an outing in mid-July."

Recreational Camping Considerations

Scales states, "The recreational camper should focus first on warmth and comfort, then consider additional attributes."

• Transportation: Scales indicates that transportation is an important consideration. He states, "If you're driving to your campsite, weight will be less of a factor; however, if you need to trek a bit with all of your gear, you may want to bring a lighter bag that is comfortable to carry and also doesn't weigh you down."
• Bag Features: "Bags that zip together and bags that feature built-in pillows or compartments for things like your mobile device and an extra pair of socks are also great features to consider," says Scales.

Backcountry Extreme Camping Considerations

According to Scales, "For the more extreme type of camper, weight and portability are key when considering a sleeping bag, along with temperature ratings and preference for sleeping space."

• Personal Preference: "While one camper may prefer a roomier bag, another may prefer a more compact space that is lighter to travel with. Considering your traditional sleeping preference will help you decide what style you'd prefer," says Scales.
• Weather Conditions: Scales states, "While the mix of compression and portability is an area to think through, the most important factor in extreme conditions should be the bag's temperature rating and material as this type of camper may find themselves in an environment that lacks a tent to lock in heat and keep them dry."
• Cold Climates: For cold climates, Scales recommends, "While down filled bags are often more costly, they are worth the up-front investment for a serious camper who is about to brave the cold; however, it should be noted that most of these bags are not waterproof."
• Wet Climates: For wet climates, Scales suggests "A synthetic bag or a bag that features a durable water repellent finish is often a cheaper expense that will help keep a camper dry in wet climates. However, it should be noted that these types of bags tend to provide less warmth compared to down filled bags.

 Wide Variety

With so many options in such a wide variety of price points, it's easy to see why it's important to consider your exact needs and preferences before you start shopping. Scales recommends starting to shop only after "you've narrowed down what features are must-haves and those that are nice-to-have."

Over the last couple of years there has been a dramatic rise in the adoption of mesh network systems for the home.

Fueled by poor Wi-Fi signals in rooms furthest from a wired router, a mesh network is one of the best solutions of gaining even, stable, strong wireless internet connectivity. And it needn't cost you a fortune.

Here we explain how it works, how much you are likely to have to pay and a few options to get you started.

What is a mesh network?

A mesh network is designed to potentially solve the problem with dead or poor zones in your home Wi-Fi. It uses multiple devices (generally called points) dotted around in different rooms to fill gaps in the wireless internet signal.

You use one main Wi-Fi point plugged into your home router through an Ethernet cable. Then, each subsequent device is placed a sufficient distance from the primary point to communicate successfully.

By doing so, each point fills an area with a stable Wi-Fi signal and, unlike Wi-Fi extenders, communicates with every other point in the system, adapting signal strength as needed. This then ensures that, no matter where in your home you wander, the signal you receive on your phone, tablet, laptop or other wireless gadgetry is the same.

What's more, you don't need separate login details for each of the points, the overall signal emitted from the points is treated the same by your wireless device, as if it comes from just one source.

For example, if you are in a bedroom where one of the secondary points is placed, it will transmit your data request to the nearest other point it finds and so-on. This also improves speed of connection in comparison, say, to a Wi-Fi extender that either requires a strong wireless signal from your existing router to perform well or works through a powerline connection which is less efficient and can impact on download and upload speeds.

Wi-Fi extenders traditionally have limited range - the same or even less than your Wi-Fi router - and adding more for greater coverage can actually cause conflicts in your signal as they do not speak to each other effectively. A mesh network communicates internally and often to ensure there are no conflicts.

How do you set up and use a mesh network?

Setting up a mesh network is generally a simple procedure. Most manufacturers offer bundles that include a main point plus at least one other device for another room.

The amount of additional points you need generally depends on how big your home is. Google, for example, claims that a smaller home or apartment will really only require one of its Google Wifi points - although you could probably just make do with your existing router in that case.

It says you need two for a medium house and three for a larger home of around 170 to 420 square metres.

Other manufacturers quote similar numbers for their systems.

We've also found that some homes require more depending on different circumstances - such as building materials and room locations. We have, for example, four points running in a medium, three-bedroomed house because we have a garden office that requires a point of its own. That way, we also have solid, stable wireless internet connectivity in the garden itself.

Most mesh network brands will supply a free iOS or Android application with their devices, which aid set-up and give you optional settings to alter afterwards.

Many give you parental controls to restrict internet access at certain times of the day, or block adult sites. You will also be able to see how strong each point's connection is and the devices currently connected.

One thing to remember is that, with the mesh network you choose taking over wireless internet duties, you do not need Wi-Fi enabled on your router too. Indeed, it could even conflict with the primary point's signal.

Most router manufacturers offer the option to disable Wi-Fi and turn it into a modem instead. This is generally called "modem mode" and you need to check your specific router's instructions how to turn it off. Also make note of how to turn it back on again, in case you change your mind at a later date.

How much will a mesh network cost?

As we've said above, the amount of devices needed for a great, wide signal depends on the size of the home it is going into. Prices also vary amongst the manufacturers, with some costing hundreds for a decent mesh setup.

Two of the biggest systems on the market, Google Wifi and Netgear Orbi, will set you back from £230 for two devices. You then have to buy additional points to expand the network further, which will cost from £130.

In both cases, you can buy a bigger starter bundle to save some cash. For example, three points in Google's own system will cost £330 - a saving of around £30 when bought separately.

BT's Whole Home Wi-Fi system is a touch cheaper, with a twin pack available at £130 and other bundles being available. It also works with any broadband service in the UK, not just BT's own.

Another route is to pay a monthly subscription. Newcomer to the UK, Plume, has introduced its system both through British broadband operator TalkTalk and as a separate offering for people with other ISPs through its online storefront (it is also available in the US).

Instead of purchasing a starter bundle, TalkTalk broadband customers can sign up for monthly membership at £9 per month and get two SuperPods as part of the subscription. Additional devices cost £69 each.

Those with other broadband suppliers can subscribe for £99 per year, with a starter bundle of SuperPods and the all-new PowerPods available from an extra £99.

What mesh network systems are available?

There are several big brand mesh network solutions available to consumers in the UK. Here are some of the systems you might already have heard of.

Google Wifi

Google's mesh network devices are simple and small enough not to stand out too much in the rooms in which they are placed.

They are uncomplicated and a doddle to set-up, although the included smartphone application doesn't have as many options as those from rival manufacturers. Still, it is a remarkably simple system to set up and use, albeit at the higher end of the price scale.

BT Whole Home Wi-Fi

BT's system is one of the least expensive when you need more than a couple of devices for your home. It also works with all broadband networks, not just BT's own.

It gives a wide wireless signal range although each station (point) is a little larger than some rivals and will therefore be clearly visible in your home.

Netgear Orbi

Netgear's solution is a little wider ranging that some of the others here in that it comprises different types of devices, so you can choose the ones that suit your situation best.

You can get an actual replacement router as part of the range, for example, or devices that offer different wireless internet speeds at different price points. There are even some models that plug directly into wall power points to remove wires altogether.

Many of them also support Alexa and Google Assistant.

We'll be reviewing the Orbi system soon, but can find out more on Netgear's dedicated Orbi website in the meantime.

Plume

TalkTalk was first to bring Plume to the UK, and continues to range an offering for its own broadband customers. However, Plume now also offers its system separately, for customers who are with a different broadband supplier.

Plume is a newcomer to the British mesh network scene but is already well-established in the States. The system comprises SuperPods and all-new PowerPod devices that, like one of the Orbi equivalents, plug straight into a wall socket. You only need to physically wire the primary Pod to your home router.

As we've explained above, the main difference with Plume is that it works on a subscription basis rather than upfront payment.

Amazon Eero

Amazon is currently in the process of buying mesh Wi-Fi company Eero although the deal hasn't gone through quite yet.

The Eero system is similar to others in that it is easy to set up out of the box and is designed to adapt to user scenarios without you even noticing. It is US only at the moment, however, so it will be interesting to see if Amazon has plans to extends its reach to other countries, including the UK.

It's one to keep an eye on for sure.

Others

The systems listed above are only a few that are already available or will be soon. There are plenty of others that are also worth checking out if you plan to make an investment in improving your home wireless internet connectivity.

The Linksys Velop, Asus Lyra, D-Link Covr and TP-Link Deco systems are also all worth examining too before opting for one over another.

They don't work across brands, so once you choose one you will need to stick with it or start again and that could be costly. So choose wisely.

Before you place your phone in the washing machine on the gentle cycle, heed this advice for cleaning it without damaging its components.

Wipe the Screen With a Microfiber Cloth

Touchscreen displays are incredibly useful and intuitive, but they can also accumulate a fair number of fingerprints and unsightly smudges. The best way to freshen up the display is by wiping it with a microfiber cloth using long, smooth strokes.

It's best if you avoid using any liquids on the screen since they can damage the coating or even the internals. Don't use your shirt or a restaurant napkin either because these materials have fibers that can scratch the screen. While there are methods for getting rid of scratches, they are not foolproof so it's best to avoid scratching the screen on your smartphone in the first place.

Only Use an Alcohol Mixture on Other Parts

For nearly all the other parts aside from the touchscreen, you can clean your phone using a minimal amount of an alcohol solution. There are special cleaning products on the market, but they are largely unnecessary. Instead, mix isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) in a 40% concentration with water. Distilled water is preferable because it does not contain the chemical impurities of tap water which can leave streaks or a film on your phone when the water dries.

1. Dampen a microfiber cloth or a cotton swab with the alcohol solution and squeeze out any excess solution.
2. Gently clean the solid phone parts, including the individual keys on physical keyboards.

Use the alcohol solution very sparingly since liquids of any kind can be harmful for electronics. Never use any sort of household cleaners, like Windex, since these products can also stain or damage your phone.

Never Spray Liquid Directly on the Device

Even when using straight water or the alcohol solution described above, never spray the liquid directly onto your cellphone. Spraying can force droplets of liquid into the internal components of your phone and cause corrosion and other damage. If you must use any liquid at all, apply it to a microfiber cleaning cloth or cotton swab and then use the cloth or swab to clean the phone.

Packing Tape Removes Dust and Debris

When you see dust, lint and other particles, as well as some smudges or fingerprints, you can remove a good amount using regular packing tape or clear tape. This is especially useful when a microfiber cleaning cloth is not available, and the method is simple.

1. Wrap some tape around the fingers on your hand with the sticky side out.
2. Proceed to dab or "roll" your fingers onto the surface of your phone to remove small debris.

Remove the Back and Battery If Possible

While many newer smartphones, like the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Apple iPhone 6s, feature a completely sealed design, many cellphones still allow you to remove the back cover to access the battery, SIM card slot and microSD slot. If your phone allows access, remove the back cover when cleaning because a significant amount of debris can get into those little crevices.

The method for cleaning the inside and edges of the back cover, as well as the exposed back of the phone, is the same as cleaning the other hard plastic parts of the phone's exterior.

1. Turn off your phone, remove the back and take out the battery.
2. Dampen a cotton swab slightly with a little distilled water and carefully clean the exposed surface.
3. If the surface doesn't air dry almost immediately, gently dry it with a microfiber cloth right away to avoid damage.
4. Reinsert the battery and put the back on the phone.

Don't Forget to Clean Your Case

Just as cleaning the inside edge of the back cover is highly recommended, you should also clean any protective case you may use with your cellphone. Most cases can be cleaned with a damp cloth using the alcohol solution described above to help remove oils and fingerprints. Also clean the inside of the case since it makes direct contact with your phone.

Invest in a UV Cell Phone Sanitizer

Killing the germs and bacteria that reside on and in your phone can be a challenge since using harsh chemicals or other cleaning solutions is not recommended. A cell phone sanitizer is a suitable alternative that uses short wavelength ultraviolet radiation. These devices shine the UV light on the surface of the phone, effectively eradicating most microscopic organisms.
