LG Electronics produces a wide range of consumer electronics, including a selection of LG phones for both its domestic market in Korea and for markets abroad like Europe and the United States. While LG may lag behind such companies as Samsungand Apple, the company has been able to establish a strong presence in the mobile phone industry, particularly with its newer line of Optimus Android smartphones.
Android
Smartphones by LG
The
primary focus for LG, as of 2013, is on the Google Android platform. These
Android smartphones compete directly against the Galaxy series from Samsung,
the Xperia series from Sony, and the One series from HTC, among others. With
the noted exception of the Nexus 4, LG Android smartphones generally come
skinned with the LG Optimus UI, which is a customized version and user
interface for the Google Android mobile operating system.
Google Nexus 4
This phone does not carry any official LG
branding, but it is produced by LG on behalf of Google as its flagship Android
smartphone. It was the phone that introduced the Google Now feature for
information updates and the revolutionary Photo Sphere camera for 360-degree
panoramas.
The Nexus 4 is compatible with all GSM carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile and Rogers Wireless. Available from the Google Play Store, the Nexus 4 sells unlocked for $299 (8GB) or $349 (16GB).
LG Intuition
Sold exclusively by Verizon Wireless, the Intuition
is effectively the American version of the LG Vu II. Whereas other smartphones
generally have a rectangular shape, the Intuition is different in that its
bright, 5-inch display has a 4:3 display ratio that is decidedly more
"square" by comparison.
Said to
be "built for speed, inside and out," the Viper 4G LTE is offered by
Sprint in the United States. It may be a good choice for Android users who
don't like the larger displays of some of the newer handsets since the Viper
only has a 4.0-inch touchscreen.
Other key features include:
Android 4.0
A1.2GHz dual core processor
8GB of internal memory
GPS navigation
5MP camera
Mobile hotspot support
Pricing
starts as low as $0.00 online with a two-year service agreement.
LG Optimus L9
Decidedly thin at just 0.36-inches in
depth, the Optimus L9 is also one of the more affordable Android smartphones
from T-Mobile.
It comes equipped with:
A vibrant 4.5-inch qHD
touchscreen
5 megapixel camera
1080p HD video recording
4G connectivity
A microSD expansion slot for up
to 32GB of storage capacity
The full up front price is $240.99. Alternatively, there is a payment plan available for $48.99 up front, followed by 24 monthly payments of $8.
LG Optimus G Pro
Improving
upon the LG Optimus G that came before it, the Optimus G Pro is one of the
largest and most powerful Android smartphones sold by AT&T.
This phone boasts:
A 5.5-inch full HD IPS color
display
1.7GHz quad core processor
An advanced 13MP camera
Three app multitasking
4G LTE connectivity
A front-facing 2MP camera with
1080p full HD video capture
Sold exclusively by Verizon Wireless, the
Intuition is effectively the American version of the LG Vu II. Whereas other
smartphones generally have a rectangular shape, the Intuition is different in
that its bright, 5-inch display has a 4:3 display ratio that is decidedly more
"square" by comparison.
Key features include:
QuickMemo
An 8MP camera
Polaris Office
VPN support
32GB internal memory
This phone sells for $49.99 on a two-year contract.
Entry Level LG Phones
While
there is a larger focus on flagship and more expensive handsets, LG also has a
selection of more affordably priced phones for the entry-level market.
LG Optimus S
Sold
through Sprint in the United States, the Optimus S is an affordable Android 2.3
smartphone with a much smaller 3.2-inch HVGA display and a less powerful 600MHz
processor. This makes it slower than its larger and more expensive
counterparts, but it is also priced accordingly and available for as low as
$0.00 on a qualifying two-year service agreement.
LG Xpression
While it may have the appearance of being an Android smartphone, the Xpression from AT&T is actually a feature phone that does not use Android as its core operating system. Even so, it is able to mirror some of the basic functionality with social networking and email through its 3.0-inch WQVGA display. It also has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a basic 2MP camera. It is listed at $0.99 with a two-year contract.
LG Freedom
Offered by US Cellular, the affordable LG
Freedom has a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen display and a full slide-out QWERTY
keyboard that makes sending messages on the go as easy as possible.
Other features include:
An integrated web browser
A 2MP camera
Stereo Bluetooth
A one-touch speakerphone. It is
not an Android smartphone
Note that the LG Freedom is not an Android smartphone. It's listed at $79.99 with a new two year contract.
LG Optimus L3
This diminutive phone also comes at a
diminutive price.
Features include:
A 3.2-inch display
Android 2.3 operating system
A 3MP camera
Expandable memory up to 32GB
The Optimus L3 can be purchased outright from Fido in Canada for $125. This includes the ability to use it with Fido's prepaid service or with its standard monthly plans.
LG F4n
It doesn't get much simpler than this basic flip phone. It is not a smartphone, it does not have a touchscreen, and it does not have a full QWERTY keyboard. Instead, it is a basic phone with a 2.2-inch display and a 1.3MP camera. This is geared largely toward users who want a cell phone to be just a phone and little more. It's available at Wind Mobile in Canada for $0.00 on the WINDtab.
Discontinued Models
As with all other consumer electronics,
cell phones also have a certain shelf life before they are deemed obsolete and
are discontinued. Before Android smartphones exploded in popularity, the Black
Label Series of "Chocolate" phones were LG's most popular handsets.
Models like the KG 800 slider and the KG 810 flip phone featured almost
glass-like exteriors and large (for the time) vibrant displays. These phones
reached the height of their popularity in late 2006, and were sold through such
carriers as Verizon and Telus.
Even
within the current trend of Android smartphones, LG has worked to differentiate
its products from the competition. A prime example of this is the LG Optimus
3D, which was also sold in the United States as the LG Thrill 4G. Sold through
AT&T in 2011, it was touted as the world's first full 3D phone. It had twin
5MP cameras on the back that were capable of not only taking 3D still photos,
but also capturing 720p video in 3D. It also had a range of 3D applications,
including a 3D gallery, 3D games, and a 3D user interface, all of which could
be viewed on the glasses-free 3D display.
Keeping Up with the Times
In the rapidly changing environment of the
mobile phone industry, LG has worked diligently to keep up with the times and
push technology forward. The full range of LG cellular phones will continue to
evolve and improve over time.

If you're in the market for a new digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by all the jargon and options. DSLRs range from entry-level models ideal for capturing family moments to full-featured professional cameras that will create jaw-dropping images. The right camera for you is out there; the secret is matching one of the options to your needs and budget.
Buying
the Right DSLR for You
Like
any major purchase, buying an interchangeable-lens camera takes a bit of
thought. Before you head out to the camera store, ask yourself a few questions.
What Is Your Budget?
Price is a huge factor to consider when
shopping for a new camera. While DSLRs have become more affordable in the last
decade, they still cost more than the average point-and-shoot model. You can
expect to spend from about $500 for an entry-level kit to several thousand
dollars on a professional camera body. Before heading to the camera store or
drooling over the options at your favorite online retailer, set a budget for
yourself and stick to it.
Don't forget that the actual DSLR camera is
only part of the expense. When purchasing a new camera, you must take into
account the added expenses of gear and accessories:
Because
accessories are such a major factor in the expense of a DSLR, it's important to
take stock of what you already have. Camera systems are proprietary, meaning
you can't easily use Nikon-mount lenses on a Canon camera body and vice versa.
If you already have a good collection of lenses, you may be more or less
married to that camera brand. You can always sell the gear you have and start
over, but that's a big change for many people.
How Will You Use It?
How you use the camera may be one of the biggest factors in deciding on a model to buy. Is this your first DSLR? Are you planning to use it to take great family shots? Or will you be selling your shots or creating art? Also, consider the type of photography you shoot the most: action, portrait, landscape, still life, macro, nature, or another genre. Ideally, you want the right camera for the right job.
If you're planning to limit
your use to family shots and maybe sports games, look for an affordable model
with good low light performance, fast autofocus, and the ability to stop action
by capturing several frames per second.
If you're looking for a
professional camera to create art or take shots for clients, nothing trumps
image quality. Look for something with a great sensor and awesome all-around
performance.
If you're getting ready to take
some awesome wildlife shots, look for something with a crop sensor to give you
extra reach and super fast shooting speeds.
DSLR Features to Consider
Once
you identify your priorities for you new camera, you can give some thought to
the various features you might want. Every feature is great, but some are more
important than others for specific uses.
Sensor Size and Resolution
The sensor is the part of your camera that
records the information in the photo, basically the digital equivalent of the
film. However, all sensors are not created equal. They have varying
resolutions, measured in megapixels. The higher the megapixel count, the more
detail and information the camera records. Generally, this translates to higher
image quality.
Sensors also come in different sizes. There
are basically two main classes of sensor size:
Full frame -
This sensor records the entire photo, just like a 35mm film camera would. They
generally perform very well in low light and, depending on the resolution, they
can capture more detail. Cameras with a full frame sensor tend to be more
expensive.
Crop sensor -
A crop sensor is a common feature in entry level cameras, but it's also present
in some mid-range models. This is a smaller sensor that takes just the center
(or a center crop) of the image you'd see with a 35mm film camera. This means
that you get kind of a zoomed-in effect, which can be handy for wildlife
photography but a pain if you're using a longer lens in tight quarters. Crop
sensor cameras tend to be cheaper than full frame models, and, with some
exceptions, they also tend to have poorer low light performance.
Shooting Speed
Shooting
speed is measured in frames per second. When you have the DSLR set to
continuous shooting, it will snap a series of photos as long as you hold down
the shutter button. How quickly it snaps these photos can be a big deal for
some types of photography. Most entry-level models can capture four or five
frames per second, which is perfectly sufficient for running kids or soccer
games. However, if you're a serious wildlife or action photographer, you might
want something with an even faster capture rate.
Autofocus Speed and Performance
How
quickly and accurately the camera attains focus can be a big deal for some
types of photography. If you are planning to take still life shots with manual
focus, this doesn't matter very much. However, if you're hoping to track
running kids or flying birds, you need a focus system you can rely on. Choose a
model with a well-respected focus system if this is important for you.
In most cases, autofocus speed is a factor
of both the camera and the lens. Many modern lenses have their own focus motors
and simply work with the camera to acquire focus. However, if you want to use
older lenses without focus motors, you'll need to make sure the camera you
purchase has its own focus motor.
Additionally, cameras come with different
numbers of focus points. These are points in the frame where you can choose put
the focus of the image. They range from around 11 in an entry level model to
over 50 in a high-end system.
Low
Light Performance
From shooting birthday parties to concerts,
there are lots of time when you want your camera to handle low light
situations. Part of low light shooting involves using a "fast" lens
with a wide aperture to let in as much light as possible, but the other part is
your camera's performance at high ISO. ISO is a holdover from film; it used to
refer to film speed or sensitivity. With digital cameras, it's a little harder
to understand, but it basically describes how much information your sensor can
capture with the available light. To deal with a dark situation without using
flash, you would increase the ISO setting on your camera.
High
ISO allows you to shoot in darker settings, but it comes at a cost. The higher
the ISO, the more noise or grain you are introducing into the image. This can
result in a loss of detail. Some cameras have exceptional performance at high
ISO, usually anything about 3200 or 6400, and those are the models you want if
you're going to be doing a lot of shooting in the dark.
Video Capability
Will
you be using your DSLR for video as well as still photography? Most models are
capable of both, but they have varying reputations in terms of their
performance and ease of use with video. If you're considering a camera that
will produce great video files, make sure you choose one that is recognized in
this area.
Entry-Level Cameras
If you're buying your first
interchangeable-lens camera, look for a model with good image quality and
basic, important features. Coming from a smartphone or point-and-shoot, you
will be amazed at the photos these cameras can produce. They are all you need
for great family shots - think birthday parties, soccer games, and holidays.
If you're just starting down the DSLR road, you don't have a lot of gear to tie you to a specific system. Instead, you can make your decision based on the price and features you'd like. Canon and Nikon are the big players here in terms of sales and deciding between them can be intimidating. Photographers will passionately argue about the superiority of each, but the truth is that both brands make excellent cameras and lenses. Also, Pentax is still a popular choice for photojournalists or anyone looking for a very rugged camera. No matter which brand you choose, you can't go wrong.
You'll
find that many of the entry-level cameras come with a "kit" lens.
This is a basic zoom, usually 18mm to 55mm, that will get you started.
Nikon D3400
This camera has the following features:
24-megapixel crop sensor
Shooting speed of five frames
per second
Comes with a kit lens
MSRP of about $500
This compact, easy-to-navigate Nikon D3400is a great introduction to more serious photography if you're coming from a point-and-shoot or smartphone. Rated one of the Best DSLR Cameras of 2017 for Beginners by CNET, there's a lot to love here. The image quality is very good, and the low-light performance and focusing and shooting speed make it a good choice for capturing family moments beautifully. You can connect the camera to your smartphone to share high quality images quickly or take your selfie game to the next level. You can also use this camera for video. Possible drawbacks here include autofocus points that are tiny and hard to see, and the absence of an on-board focus motor that would allow you to use older Nikon lenses.
The Nikon D3400 comes in red and black. You can choose between a single 18-55mm lens kit for $500 or a two-lens bundle that also includes a longer, 55-200mm zoom for about $600. Both are available at Adorama.
Canon
EOS Rebel T6i
Features of this camera include:
24-megapixel crop sensor
Shooting speed of five frames
per second
Comes with a kit lens
MSRP of about $900
Another great option for an entry-level model is the Canon EOS Rebel T6i. According to TechRadar, it's one of the Best Entry-Level DSLRs for 2017 because of its excellent controls and articulating touchscreen, as well as its spectacular image quality. You can use the model to take video or stills, connect to your smartphone for easy image sharing and awesome selfies, and shoot up to five frames per second to stop action at sports games and other quick events. Low light performance is good, although TechRadar claims the detail resolution of this camera doesn't quite hold up to similarly-priced Nikon alternatives. Selecting autofocus points is also slow.
The Canon EOS Rebel T6i comes in black only. B&H Photo offers the model with a 15-55mm kit lens for about $750 or with an additional 55-250mm zoom for about $1,100.
Mid-Level DSLRs
If
you're moving up from your first DSLR or you know you'll need more than an
entry-level model can offer, you may want to consider a mid-level DSLR. These
cameras blend professional features with an affordable price tag. They tend to
offer improved image quality and low light performance, and they can have high
resolution crop sensors or full frame sensors. They typically include an
on-board focus motor to handle focus on older lenses, allowing you to use
affordable and interesting vintage glass with your new camera.
Generally,
these models are sold as a camera body only. You can sometimes purchase a kit
that includes a zoom or prime lens or two, but the assumption is that you'll
have lenses already or will be purchasing lenses for a specific purpose. Most
models are available only in black.
Nikon D500
Features of this camera include:
20-megapixel crop sensor
Shooting speed of 10 frames per
second
Camera body only
MSRP of about $2,000
If you're interested in shooting wildlife or sports, the Nikon D500 is a good camera to consider. This crop-sensor model provides the reach you need to make the most of telephoto lenses and the continuous shooting speed to freeze action in a jaw-dropping manner. FStoppers calls this model the "ideal action and wildlife camera." The review also notes that with its astounding 153 autofocus points (only 55 selectable by the photographer) and fantastic image quality, this is a great model for wedding photography and an acceptable portrait photography option. For portrait photographers, or anyone else who likes a shallow depth of field, a full frame sensor might be a better option.
You can purchase the Nikon D500 from Amazon for about $2,000 for the body only or for about $2,600 with a 16-80 mm zoom lens.
Canon EOS 7D Mark II
Camera features include:
20-megapixel crop sensor
Shooting speed of 10 frames per
second
Camera body only
MSRP of about $1,800
Canon makes its own model that's ideal for action and wildlife, the EOS 7D Mark II. The specs on this model are similar to the Nikon D500, although the Canon was released first. The 65 autofocus points allow creative composition of your shot, and the shooting speed of 10 frames per second lets you capture the fastest action (provided your chosen shutter speed is fast enough). Photography Life praises the build quality of this model and its excellence for wildlife and action photography but notes the dynamic range (ability to capture the range of light to dark in a scene) is not impressive and that it isn't really designed to be a portrait or landscape camera. The review also notes the autofocus system is exceptional at tracking moving subjects.
You can buy the Canon EOS 7D Mark II at Best Buy for about $1,500 for the body only. Best Buy lets you create a custom bundle with a lens of your choice, which can offer a slight discount.
Professional DSLRs
There's
actually a huge range of professional DSLRs, which are sold as the camera body
only. You can expect to spend anything from about $1,800 to over $5,000,
depending on the features you need. However, if you're looking for a general
purpose professional camera with a full frame sensor, the models listed below
stand out in reviews. They aren't the high-speed, crop sensor beasts wildlife
photographers need, but they offer exceptional image quality for portraits,
landscapes, still life images, and more.
Canon EOS 5D Mark III
Features include:
22.3-megapixel full-frame
sensor
Shooting speed of six frames
per second
Camera body only
MSRP of about $2,800
The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is designed to meet most of your professional photography needs. In fact, CNET calls it the "best general purpose pro DSLR." It offers great image quality, sharpness, and autofocus performance with 61 focus points. Ideally suited for everything from weddings to sweeping landscape shots, this is the camera many Canon enthusiasts will enjoy shooting. It's also exceptional in low light and great for video.
The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is available from Ritz Camera for about $2,500 as a camera body only or as a bundle with a 24-105mm zoom lens for about $3,100.
Nikon D750
Features of the Nikon D750 include:
24.3-megapixel full-frame
sensor
Shooting speed of 6.5 frames
per second
Camera body only
MSRP of about $1,900
The Nikon D750 is a stand-out option for Nikon shooters looking for a general purpose pro camera body. Great low light performance, excellent build quality and features, and outstanding image quality make this model a hit with photographers and reviewers alike. In 2014, Popular Photography called the Nikon D750 the camera of the year, and TechRadar listed it as one of the Top 10 Best Full-Frame DSLRs in 2017. It's excellent for portraits, weddings, landscapes, and more. This is also an exceptional camera for video.
B&H Photo offers the Nikon D750 for about $1,900 for the body only and about $2,400 with a 24-120mm zoom lens.
Be Happy with Your Camera
Whether you're looking for a professional
camera to take stunning images for clients or an entry-level model to capture
the moments that matter most, there are lots of great options to choose from.
Take your time thinking about how you'll use your new camera before you choose,
and you'll be sure to be happy with your purchase.

Water resistance is tested in measurements of atmosphere (ATM). Each ATM denotes 10 meters of static water-pressure. This is not the depth to which a watch can be worn. Many watch cases will list the basic measurement of 1 ATM as "water-resistant." These watches will withstand small splashes of water but should not be worn while washing the hands or submerging the hands in water.
Remember, water resistance is tested under static conditions. Wearing a watch which is 50 metres water resistant in water will expose the watch to a much greater pressure than during a 50 metre static test. Therefore the number of metres shown on the watch does not indicate the depth that the watch can be taken to.
Here is a general guide 50M = 5ATM = Shower Proof - it's ok to get it wet a bit. 100M = 10ATM = Extended Water Exposure good for swimming or snorkeling. 200M = 20ATM = Pressure Resistant made for Scuba and Skin Diving.
Q: A 100M watch is surely strong enough on a shallow dive?! A: No! It isn't because it has not been high pressure sealed. 100M watches are only good for Snorkeling! Q: What will happen if I try to dive with a watch that is less than 200M Resistant? A: The watch's seal will be broken, it will flood and break..irrepairably. Q: So which watch to buy? A: Think about what you need it for and bear in mind that Scuba Watches (200M) look really cool but tend to be very heavy, which makes them uncomfortable for everyday use.
In addition to traditional school supplies like pens and paper, one of the most important purchases for any student going back to school in the modern age is a reliable computer. Regardless of the field of study, computers have become an integral part of any educational program and it is important to shop around for the best laptop, desktop, or convertible PC to suit the student's particular needs and budget.
1.
Apple MacBook Air
Many students look for a laptop that is comfortable to use and offers good performance. They also want one with good battery life in a thin and lightweight frame. Embodying all of these characteristics is the 13-inch Apple MacBook Air. Selected by The Verge as the best laptop of 2015, the MacBook Air is "super sleek" and comes in multiple configurations. The base model features a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM and 128GB of flash storage.
Price: About $1000
2. Dell
XPS 18
Not every student necessarily wants to carry around a notebook computer all day. One of the best all-in-one PCs on the market today is the Dell XPS 18. Earning an Editor's Choice Award from PC Magazine, the XPS 18 is unique in that it can function as an extra large tablet with a five-hour battery life or it can be docked and work like a traditional Windows desktop PC. Features include an 18-inch full HD screen, Intel Core i7 processor, 256GB SSD and 8GB of system memory.
Price: About $1,200
3.
Lenovo C560 Touch
For those who seek the convenience of an all-in-one PC but have a tighter budget, the Lenovo C560 Touch is a desirable option to consider. Named the best affordable all-in-one by Tom's Guide, the 23-inch C560 Touch is perfectly adequate with a Core i3 processor, integrated webcam, and excellent audio. This is a great way to get the bigger screen of a desktop PC without needing to have a separate tower. It's a great idea for small dorm spaces as it can serve as a multimedia center for services like Netflix too.
Price: Around $850
4.
Microsoft Surface Pro 3
Particularly of interest to students in creative fields like graphic design but equally versatile for those studying other subjects is the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. Technically a Windows tablet with an optional keyboard, the Surface Pro 3 features a unique pen for writing right on the screen, plus surprisingly robust performance in a slender package. Engadgetscores it a 79/100 with user reviews averaging a very impressive 8.9/10.
Price: About $800
5. Dell
Chromebook 11
With the continued growth of web-based apps, the pure online experience of Chrome OS is increasingly compelling. While the far more expensive Chromebook Pixel and the much heavier Acer Chromebook 15 C910 were rated higher in TechRadar's list of the best Chromebooks, the third ranked product was the far more affordable Dell Chromebook 11. TechRadar says it is a "star in almost every regard," featuring a 2.6GHz Intel Bay Trail-M processor, 4GB of RAM, and an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 pixel touchscreen display. Students who have smaller budgets and don't require extraordinary performance will find a great value here.
Price: Close to $250
6. Asus
Zenbook UX305
For those heading back to school who love the slick form factor of a MacBook but prefer a Windows-based machine at a more affordable price point, the Asus Zenbook UX305 is an exceptional choice. With high-end specs like the 13.3-inch full HD anti-glare display, 8GB of RAM, 256GB SSD and 8-hour battery life, the super thin UX305 earned a Laptop Mag Editor's Choice Award. The "gorgeous, all-aluminum body" is terrific, easily sliding into even slim backpacks. It's far thinner and even lighter than many textbooks.
Price: around $700
7. Acer
Predator AG-605-UR39
Dollar for dollar, spec for spec, traditional desktop tower PCs will always be more powerful than their laptop counterparts. Particularly for those going back to school in fields that require more computing power, like 3D modeling and video editing, a powerful desktop like the Acer Predator AG-605-UR39 could fit the bill. PC World loved it, saying that few other PCs are "this competitively priced for the components delivered," which include a fast Core i7 processor, 8GB of DDR3-1600 RAM and a powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 graphics card.
Price: About $1,000
8. HP Stream 13
Buying a brand new Windows laptop does not need to be an expensive endeavor. Offering a tremendous value is the cheerfully colorful HP Stream 13. It's very affordable and includes one-year of Microsoft Office 365 Personal. Recode applauds the "roomy" keyboard and the "good selection of ports," calling the Stream 13 a good alternative to Chromebooks. Basic specifications include a 1366 x 768 pixel 13-inch screen, 2GB of RAM and an Intel Celeron processor. This is a good choice for middle school and high school students who want a dash of personality in a functional Windows computer.
Price:
About $230
9. Apple MacBook Pro
The Apple MacBook Air is good, but some students need to have more power than what that machine can offer. Stepping up the OS X scale is the hugely popular Apple MacBook Pro. Boasting excellent battery life and great build quality, the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2015) earned a perfect 10/10 score from Trusted Reviews with the review citing "not much" for cons. The base 13-inch configuration features the Force Touch trackpad, 2.7GHz Core i5 processor, 128GB flash storage, 8GB of LPDDR3-1866 memory and a 10-hour battery. Students who need the added power for photo and video editing, among other multimedia applications, should find a lot to like here.
Price:
Around $1,300
10. Build Your Own
The convenience of purchasing a ready-to-go computer for back to school cannot be understated, but the option of building your own computer should not be ignored either. PC Gamer explains why you should build your own PC, describing the learning experience that is inherently in line with the goal of education. What's more, the customization options for building your own computer are near limitless, creating the ideal combination of processors, graphics cards, chassis, storage, and more. Students in engineering and computer science can glean many great lessons by learning how their computer is put together by doing it themselves.

Finding the right cold-weather camping gear is an important factor in having an enjoyable winter camping experience. Thomas Gooch, Product Manager at Eureka! Tents, took the time to share his expertise on choosing a tent and sleeping bag appropriate for winter camping, as well as providing other important winter camping tips.
Choosing
a Tent
There
are many factors to consider when choosing the ideal tent for your next camping
trip.
Looking for a Four Season Tent
Gooch states that there are five important
features to look for in a tent suitable for winter camping:
Full coverage fly: "The
tent fly needs to come down to the ground to prevent wind and rain from blowing
into the tent."
Vestibules with ground flaps: "This
will help hold the vestibule down to keep the wind from blowing up and
under."
Fly vent covers: "All
fly vents should have covers so they can be closed in case of blowing snow and
rain."
Strong frame: "Four
season tents should have a stronger frame than standard tents to withstand
tougher weather conditions."
Breathable material: "Breathable
material on the inner part of the tent allows the tent to breathe while still
giving some thermal protection. This will also help guard against condensation."
Important Features
Gooch stresses that choosing a high quality
tent is essential for winter camping. He states, "There are a few features
that high quality tents will have that lower quality tents do not offer."
Features Gooch encourages winter campers to look for include:
Breathable walls on inner tent
Good quality YKK zippers
Strong DAC frames
Guy line points for additional
strength
Reinforcements at guy out
points and stake out points
Taped seams all over fly and
tent, including reinforcements
Recommended Models
The
type of tent you select will first be determined by how many campers you need
to accommodate.
Four-Person
According to Gooch, the Eureka Assault Outfitter 4 tent costs about $460 and is an excellent example of a four-season tent that will fill your winter camping needs. He states, "The tent sleeps four and weighs 13.5 pounds. Its domed shape allows it to easily shed heavy snow and rain while withstanding strong winds, which is essential for quickly changing winter weather patterns."
Gooch
continues, "Even for two campers, this roomy tent is an excellent choice.
Keep in mind that you can store some of your camping gear outdoors in the summer,
but in the winter you will want to keep it inside your tent. This should be
kept in mind when you are tent shopping."
Two-Person
Because most tents designed for cold conditions are created specifically with the needs of backpackers in mind, the majority are two-person tents. Eureka's Alpenlite two- person, four-season style is a popular choice.
According to Outdoor Gear Lab field testing results, two other highly rated winter tents to consider include Hilleberg's Jannu and Tarra models, both of which are designed for two people and sell for just under $800 and $900, respectively, and the Black Diamond Firstlightis a two-person tent that costs just under $400.
Winter Sleeping Bags
Gooch also offers some insight on selecting
the best sleeping bag for winter camping. Here are the features that he says
are most important:
"Choose a sleeping bag with a temperature rating that you can trust. Big name brands know their bags will meet the temperature ratings they advertise."
"Look for a bag with double-offset or shingle construction quilting. This means that no seams give the cold temperatures a direct path into the sleeping bag."
"Choose a bag with an insulated zipper cover. Zippers will let the cold in if left by themselves."
"A two-way zipper is an important feature. Since it is better to pack for the coldest temperatures you can expect to see, a two-way zipper allows you to open the lower part of the zipper for venting if it is too warm in the bag."
"A trapezoidal foot box is a good option. This fits around the natural position of a camper's feet without allowing them to press up against the side. Feet usually are among the first things to get cold. If your feet press against the bag, it reduces the insulation of the bag."
"A storm collar keeps warm air from escaping through the top opening of the bag."
"A good hood to fit around the head where most heat is lost is an important key to staying warm."
According
to Gooch, a winter sleeping bag should be selected based on the features
mentioned above and the weather you anticipate experiencing. He states,
"If any type of wet weather is anticipated, use a synthetic insulation.
Down does not work when it is wet."
Recommended Models
According to user reviews on Trailspace.com, some of the best sleeping bags for subzero temperatures are made by Feathered Friends and Western Mountaineering. According to BackpackerTest.org, Eureka also offers highly-rated cold weather sleeping bags that perform well in long-term field testing.
Feathered Friends: This high-quality bag is for serious outdoor enthusiasts who frequently camp in subzero temperatures. It will definitely keep you warm, but comes with a hefty price, with models ranging from just over $675 to just under $1000.
Western Mountaineering: Sleeping bags from this company are also designed for those who are quite serious about winter camping. Sub-zero options are priced similar to Feathered Friends models, with those designed for cold temperatures above zero run about $300.
Enjoy Winter Camping
You don't have to delay camping until the weather turns warm. With the right equipment and preparation, you can have a great time camping out when the temperatures are chilly. Get organized with a winter camping packing list and you'll be on your way to a cold weather outing that you'll remember for a lifetime!

Appealing to the value-conscious consumer, Riccar sewing machines are affordable and easy to use. These machines range from simple mechanical models to sergers and heavy duty sewing machines. Although new Riccar machines can be hard to find, many seamstresses enjoy sewing on vintage Riccar models.
Where
to Buy Riccar Sewing Machines
Although
Riccar was once a major Japanese producer of sewing machines, today the company
focuses most of its manufacturing on vacuum cleaners. You can still buy a new
machine from an authorized retailer, and because of the quality of these sewing
machines, used options also abound.
New Riccar Machines
New Riccar machines range in price from about $150 to over $700. Only authorized dealers can sell Riccar machines. The Riccar website offers a location-searchable list of dealers. Keep in mind that the relative rarity of these machines can present a problem when it comes to service. Before you buy a new Riccar, ask about where you can get the machine repaired if it runs into problems.
In addition to these approved dealers, you can find Riccar machines at the Sewing Machine Outlet. One of the only authorized dealers that sells online, this shop offers several Riccar models, starting at around $130.
Vintage Riccar Machines
It's
far easier for online shoppers to find used models of Riccar sewing machines.
You'll find some great vintage options at the following sites:
eBay - The selection on eBay is continually changing, but you'll find machines from the 1950s, 1960s, and beyond. Be sure to examine the photos carefully and ask questions about the condition of the machine. You can also purchase parts for used machines from eBay.
Etsy - This artist marketplace also has a section devoted to vintage wares. Sewing machines, including Riccar, are popular with buyers, and the selection is always changing.
Bonanza - This online sales site sometimes has listings for used Riccar machines. As with eBay, the selection will vary. Check back from time to time if you're looking for a specific model.
Riccar Models
A few
specific Riccar models are popular with seamstresses. Depending on your sewing
experience level and machine requirements, one of these options might be ideal
for you.
Riccar Model 250
At
about $150, this simple machine would make a good beginner option or a starter
machine for a child. The Riccar Model 250 can perform two stitches and features
a front-loading thread hook. This is a free arm sewing machine and comes with
an extension table.
Riccar Model 1570
Featuring
15 pre-programmed stitches, this mid-level Riccar retails for around $200. It
includes a built-in stitch for making buttonholes and a reverse stitch that's
activated with a simple push button. This machine will handle most home sewing
needs, but it will not perform embroidery, quilting functions, or heirloom-style
sewing.
Riccar Model R750
At the
high end of the Riccar product spectrum, the Model R750 retails for around
$800. It's designed for heavy use and can handle thick fabrics. It comes preset
with 29 stitches, some of which are decorative. You can use the dials on the
front of this machine to adjust tension, stitch width, and pressure. This is a
good option for the home seamstress who needs a heavy duty machine but doesn't
want to hassle with a computerized model.
Affordable and Simple but Hard to Find
If you're looking for an all-mechanical machine that is affordable, a Riccar sewing machine might be a good choice even considering its limited availability. While these machines don't have all the bells and whistles offered by brands like Bernina and Brother, they do offer the worry-free operation that simpler machines can provide.
