  • Wooden Toy Trains and Table

Parents who are looking for long-lasting, durable railroad sets for their young train lovers may want to look into wooden toy trains and table sets. These sturdy toys will stand up to a lot of wear and tear; as toys go, they're a great investment.

    Train Tables

While a train table is not required for most train tracks, it makes it easier to place the tracks and provides a dedicated space for playing with trains.

    Thomas & Friends

Learning Curve's Thomas & Friends Wooden Grow-with-Me Play Table will thrill young Thomas the Tank Engine fans with its pictures of popular trains from the Island of Sodor. The table has two sides. One side features its own grooved track that most standard wooden trains will fit on. However the smaller, Take-Along Thomas Trains do not fit on the track. The other side features images from the Island of Sodor for children to build on with their own train sets.

    Canyon Road

Step2's Deluxe Canyon Road Train and Track Table is ideal for parents who do not want to spend time setting up a train track, just to have a child tear it down. Along with a built-in track, the table comes with a lid that also doubles as a tabletop when the track is not in use. Most standard wooden and plastic toy trains, including Thomas & Friends trains, are compatible with the grooved track.

    KidKraft

Kidkraft is known for producing high-quality train tables. All of KidKraft's tables are compatible with most train tracks and train sets. Some of the tables available from KidKraft include:

    • The 2-in-1 Activity Table with LEGO compatible board features storage under the double-sided play board and also comes with a train set and 200 LEGO-type blocks.
    • The Boys Metropolis Train Table Set features a rolling trundle for storage. It also comes with a 100-piece train set that includes a tunnel, a two-tier bridge and an airport.
    • The Honey Train Table is a basic table with rounded edges to make it safer for young children. A special lip helps keep pieces on the table and off the floor.
    • The Wooden Waterfall Mountain Train Table and Set features a play board with a fun country scene for children to build a track around. It also comes with three plastic bins for storing the 120-piece track and train set.

    Multi-Activity Table

Melissa and Doug's Multi-Activity Table is not designed to be used solely with trains, but its double-sided board makes a perfect surface for setting up a train track. It also features a jumbo drawer for storing trains and tracks.

    Tracks and Trains

Most starter train track sets will entertain your child for a little while, but eventually he will want to begin building bigger, more elaborate tracks. When choosing a train track to start your child with, look for a brand that offers multiple expansion packs and is compatible with other brands.

    Thomas & Friends

The Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway Starter Sets come with enough pieces to make a small circular or oval track and a couple of trains. From there you have the option of purchasing multiple expansion packs and accessories to add to your child's track. While the tracks in the Thomas & Friends sets are high quality, they also often come with a high price tag. Thankfully, most other companies that make wooden train tracks design them to be compatible with Thomas & Friends tracks, so you can expand your collection with less expensive options. If you prefer to stick with the Thomas & Friends brand to expand your track, the following expansion packs may work well:

    • Bulk Wood Track Pack includes a variety of different pick-n-choose pieces
    • Figure 8 Set Expansion Pack comes with curved pieces to help make a figure-eight and other unique track designs.

    Chuggington

Another popular train show, Chuggington, is the inspiration for a set of tracks and trains. The tracks have been designed to connect with most other popular train track sets, but the trains that are included with tracks are bigger than most wooden trains and may not work with features from other tracks. For young children, the Chuggington Wood Beginners Set comes with 13 pieces to create an oval track, two trains and two road signs. Other accessories and track sets are also available.

    Melissa and Doug

Melissa and Doug is known for creating high-quality, wooden kids toys and its train tracks are no exception. Its simple sets, such as the Farm Animal Train Set, feature eight pieces to make a circular track, a train engine and two connecting cars. Larger sets from Melissa & Doug, such as the Deluxe Wooden Railway Set, are still fairly simplistic and also tend to be some of the higher-priced track sets.

    Imaginarium

Imaginarium offers larger sets of train tracks and accessories for the same prices as some of the more popular brands. The tracks are compatible with Thomas & Friends, Brio and other standard wooden train tracks. A few of Imaginarium's track sets include:

    • Mountain Pass Railroad, with over 100 pieces, including a mountain with tunnel, multiple bridges, trains, signs, trees and other pieces of scenery.
    • Deluxe Track Pack, featuring multiple sizes and styles of pieces to add to any track set, including a bridge and pieces to connect multiple rails.
    • Straight Track Assortment, which includes 16 straight track pieces of varying sizes.

    IKEA

IKEA's train tracks are simplistic, inexpensive and compatible with Thomas & Friends, Imaginarium and other standard train tracks. Whether you are just starting out with trains or want to expand your track, you may want to try the LILLABO series of tracks and vehicles.

Buying Wooden Toy Trains and Table Sets

Wooden trains don't come cheap. They're pretty pricey when you compare them to plastic trains and tracks. Once you buy a wooden set, however, you can expect it to last for years and years making it well worth the money in the long run. Average prices for the wooden tables alone usually begin around $100 and go up from there. Prices of trains and tracks vary. You may need to shop a little at a time because building an entire train village could easily run into the hundreds of dollars

When deciding what type of table to buy, keep these considerations in mind:

    • Are you buying only one brand?: Not all wooden trains and table sets are compatible. Maybe you want to stick to one particular type of train; if that's the case, you may have to only buy trains, tracks and a table from one brand. If you want to mix and match a little, make sure you buy pieces from brands that work together.
    • Do you want to create your own table?: You can find wooden train tables already complete. They may have tracks attached in a prearranged pattern that could be unmovable. If you want to inject some of your creativity, look for tables that allow you to build tunnels, bridges and rearrange pieces the way you want.
    • Changing the table surface: Find out whether the table you're looking at has a play board attached or if you can change out the surface area if desired. Some play boards are two-sided, allowing you to turn them over and enjoy another view whenever you want.

    Play for All Ages

It's always great for parents when they find toys that appeal to a wide age range. Wooden toy trains and table sets are perfect as preschool-age toys and elementary school-age toys. Although many parents will give these toys to boys, girls can also enjoy the fun of playing with trains. Once you have a good assortment of trains and accessories, there's plenty of variety and toys for everyone. Wooden trains never go out of style and can easily be saved and handed down to future siblings and generations.

  • Purchasing Snowboarding Goggles

There are many things that constitute snowboarding equipment, from the snowboard itself, to bindings, boots, gloves, toques/helmets, and more. An absolutely essential article is a good pair of snowboarding goggles, but how can you know which one is right for you? The following tips will show you how to equip yourself with the best for this popular winter sport.

    Tips for Choosing Snow Goggles

    Comfort First

First and foremost, you want your snowboarding goggles to be comfortable because you will be wearing them the entire time you're on the ski hill (or half-pipe, as the case may be). Ensure that there is enough foam padding on the goggles where it meets your face, with no sharp edges exposed which could cut into you. Make sure that the goggles fit well and that they are neither too big nor too small.

    Look for Ventilation

Without proper ventilation, not only will your eyes (and face) get quite uncomfortable from the stuffiness, but your goggles will likely fog up. This can be quite the dangerous proposition, especially since you'll be flying down the mountain at breakneck speed. There should be vents both on the top and bottom of the goggles, and ideally the lenses themselves are anti-fog. Your own body heat will cause most of the fogging, so while in the store, try breathing into the inside of the goggles and see how well the lenses hold up.

    UV Protection Is a Must

The actual color of the lenses themselves is of personal preference, with most snowboard goggle models coming in a variety of hues. I tend to avoid the yellow lenses myself because it makes the scene appear too bright for my tastes, while at the same time, you should avoid lenses that are too dark as well so that you are not going down the ski hill completely blind. Most people opt for an orange or pinkish hue.

Despite the fact that snowboarding is primarily a winter sport, the sun still plays a significant role because its bright rays reflect off of the white snow and into your eyes. In this way, your ski goggles will double as a pair of sunglasses. Most snowboarding goggles come with UV protection and some form of anti-glare, but double check with the sales associate before making your purchase.

    Consider Style and Appearance

Your snowboarding goggles are also an article of clothing, so to speak, and snowboarding is an incredibly fashionable sport. While this may not be a concern to some people, it will dictate the choices made by many more. Consider the color that your touque, snowboard jacket, snowboard pants, board, bindings, and the like will be and try to find a pair of goggles that match or complement your chosen color scheme.

    Popular Snow Goggle Brands

There are many reputable brands in the business of making snowboarding goggles, most of which you'd already be familiar with through your journeys of looking for other snowboard and ski gear. Among the most popular companies that people turn to include:

    • Oakley
    • Spy
    • Uvex
    • Smith
    • Scott
    • Dragon

    Prices Vary by Quality

As with everything else, the prices for a decent pair of snowboarding goggles vary widely. At the low end, you can pick up bargain basement pairs for less than $30 (try to avoid these) and the sky is the limit when it comes to professional-level goggles. As a rule of thumb, most sets for the average casual snowboarder will run you between $80-$120. Shop around for the best deal. Hitting up the outlet malls and eBay for last year's model is usually a good idea, because as a hobby, you don't need the most cutting edge snowboarding goggle technology.

  • Cell Phone Skins

Not to be confused with cell phone cases, cell phone skins can be described as decals or stickers that people can add to their cell phones to give them a unique and personal look. Skins are usually made out of a vinyl material that is easily adhered to the surface of the cell phone. They are usually not permanent, so they can be peeled off and replaced.

Where to Buy Cell Phone Skins

Cell phone skins are available for purchase from a number of retailers. Some online stores even offer the ability to upload your own custom artwork for further personalization.

    SkinIt

The SkinIt online store organizes its offerings by the brand name of the cell phone, covering a broad range of devices. These include Apple, HTC, LG, Motorola, BlackBerry, Nokia, Samsung and Pantech. Under each brand is a listing of the specific models for which cell phone skins are available. Once on the page for the particular cell phone model, the listing of skins can be sorted by category and sub-category.

    Design Options

Skins featuring designs from various professional and college sports teams are available, like the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers, the NBA's Boston Celtics, and MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers. Indeed, there are usually multiple designs for each team.

Numerous other design categories are available from SkinIt. Options include:

    • Comics & Superheroes: Such characters as Batman, Green Lantern, Peanuts, Where's Waldo, and Wonder Woman
    • Sanrio Hello Kitty: Cute characters include Tuxedosam, Kerroppi and Hello Kitty
    • Star Wars: Styles include Darth Vader, Jabba the Hutt, Rebel Emblem, and Grand Jedi Master Yoda
    • Military: Major forces like the US Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines
    • Countries of the World: Flag-based imagery from all around the globe
    • Gaming: Video game imagery from classic Sonic the Hedgehog to more modern Borderlands 2
    • Religious: Mostly Christian imagery, like the Christian Fish, the Cross and highlighted scripture

    Pricing

Most cell phone skins from SkinIt retail for about $15.00, including secure fast shipping and a 30-day, hassle-free return policy. Custom designs are typically $19.99 and can be personalized through the in-browser wizard.

    Nuvango

Formerly known as Gelaskins, Nuvango provides some very unique designs for its catalog of cell phone skins. Most major brands of mobile phones are supported by Nuvango, including Apple iPhone, Blackberry, Google, Sony, HTC and Nokia. By clicking on the downward facing arrow next to each brand, you can select your specific device from the list. The gallery of available skins for that device are then displayed. This includes both the front and rear skins. The results can be further organized based on the "Collections" offered by Nuvango.

    Design Options

Nuvango's designs are more artistic or expressive in their approach, rather than focusing on sports teams and other well-known iconography. Options include Abstract Art, Patterns & Textures, Urban Art and The Ocean Called.

In addition to the range of designs offered by the professional artists, Nuvango also provides customers with the option of uploading and creating their own custom cell phone skins. This can be accessed by clicking on "Custom" near the top of the website and scrolling down to the section for Phone, Laptop & Tablet Skins.

Uploaded artwork must satisfy four key criteria:

    • Must be at least 2000 pixels in size (40MB maximum file size)
    • Saved in RGB colorspace (instead of CMYK)
    • Uploaded in JPG or PNG format
    • Must be original art, not violating trademarks or copyright

The web-based wizard walks you through the process of creating your custom skin. This involves choosing your device, uploading your image and setting the focal point.

    Pricing

Nuvango's skins typically sell for $15 for both the front and the back.

    DecalGirl

DecalGirl sells both custom and ready-made cell phone skins in a variety of styles. Product support is very good with such brands as Apple, Blackberry, Google, Huawei, LG, Motorola, Nokia and Palm. After choosing the brand and the specific model of phone, a gallery is presented with the available cell phone skin designs for that device. The results can be filtered based on the artist, brand, and artwork type. They can also be sorted by best sellers, most liked, trending or newest.

    Design Options

Decal Girl offers designs featuring a number of well-known brands, like Disney Princess, Mickey Mouse, Kawasaki, The Muppets and Winnie the Pooh. Additional options include:

    • For Her: Feminine designs, many of which with a floral theme
    • Anime/Manga: Mostly generic and unique Japanese-inspired designs not directly tied to existing franchises
    • Celestial: Space-themed visuals depicting the Milky Way, a pulsar, a black hole or constellations
    • Horror: Frightful cell phone skins with skeletons, skulls and the stuff of nightmares
    • Music: Showing instruments and speakers, as well as branded designs from Kicker
    • Patriotic: American designs with camo, the American flag, bald eagles and more
    • Travel: Featuring visuals inspired from around the world, like Paris, London and Japan

DecalGirl also allows you to upload custom artwork to create your own unique skin. As with Nuvango, there is a browser-based utility for uploading images and then rotating, resizing and placing them on the phone. You can also add text or change the background color. When finished, you will be shown a preview before proceeding to the checkout. Most custom skins are $15.

    Pricing

Most of DecalGirl's packages include both the front and back skin, as well as a matching wallpaper, for between $10 and $15.

    DesignSkins

DesignSkins offers DesignFoils cell phone skin in two main types. The regular DesignSkins are "ultra thin, for every device" and are similar to the products offered by the other websites listed above. The 3D HaptikSkins, on the other hand, are skins that come with a "classy texture" for a unique feeling. Both are available for a range of devices. After selecting the type of skin, you can then search for your specific mobile phone. Supported models include the iPhone 6, Galaxy S5, and the HTC One M8.

    Design Options

    Featured categories of designs include:

    • Abstract: With bold splashes of color, geometric shapes and other unique looks
    • Animals: From photos of cute kitties and majestic horses to drawings of howling wolves and curious owls
    • Fine Arts: Re-creations of masterpieces like Starry Night and the Great Wave of Kanagawa
    • Football: Popular football (soccer) clubs like Weder Bremen, VFL Wolfsburg and Team Deutschland
    • In Love: Cute and romantic designs, ranging from Mickey and Minnie Mouse to lovely hearts
    • Vehicle: Classic cars like the Shelby 500, as well as modern sports cars like the Porsche GT2

In addition to the designs available through DesignSkins, the website also provides a utility to create your own by uploading your own photos and images. The browser utility allows for the addition of shapes and text, as well as adjustments for transparency, height, width and rotation.

    Pricing

DesignSkins start at $7.95, while 3D HaptikSkins start at $19.95.

A Brand New Look for Your Cell Phone

For people who are really concerned with how their cell phones look, adding a personalized and unique cell phone skin is the perfect solution to sprucing up the look of a phone. Since the skin itself is no thicker than a standard screen protector, it doesn't add any bulk to the device. Cell phone skin companies make skins that fit other sorts of electronic equipment too, so it is also possible to customize tablets, notebooks and portable game consoles.

  • Best Android Tablets in 2019

There aren't a ton of great Android tablets out there, but the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 offers the best overall Android tablet experience of the bunch. It has a big screen, high-end specs, a stylus, and support for a full keyboard. It's expensive, and not the right pick for anyone who wants a smaller and more portable tablet, but as an all-around device, it can't be beaten. For those who have different needs (or budgets), there are a few other picks that work well as media consumption devices and won't break the bank.

    • Best Overall:Samsung Galaxy Tab S4
    • Productivity for Less:Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e
    • Powerful and Affordable:Huawei MediaPad M5 8.4
    • Big on a Small Budget:Amazon Fire HD 10
    • Cheap as it Gets:Amazon Fire HD 8

Best Overall — Samsung Galaxy Tab S4

The most important things to have in a full-size Android tablet are a great screen, loud speakers, strong build quality, and software that makes use of the extra screen size. That's what makes the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 the best Android tablet.

Its spec sheet leaves little to be desired, with a super-fast Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, plenty of storage and well-optimized software. And because it's a Samsung product, you're getting a best-in-class display — coming in at 10.5 inches — and an amazing metal-and-glass build.

Beyond the specs, you get extras like great quad speakers, a microSD card slot and a stylus included in the box. And despite being thin and light, it gets great battery life. You can add a great first-party keyboard cover to get some work done, and then jump into the DeX desktop-style interface for a more laptop-like experience.

If you want an Android tablet and you're willing to spend the money, there's really nowhere else to go but the Galaxy Tab S4.

    Pros:

Best screen available on an Android tablet

    • S Pen stylus included in the box
    • Robust and beautiful metal-and-glass frame
    • Long battery life
    • First-party detachable keyboard support
    • High-quality quad speakers

    Cons:

    • Expensive if you're only a casual tablet user
    • Not suited for portrait or handheld use for long

Productivity for Less — Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e

The Galaxy Tab S4's capabilities — and price — are a bit overkill for most people. That's why Samsung makes the Galaxy Tab S5e. It's built on the same tenets as the Tab S4, but takes strategic cuts back in order to be more affordable — and that makes it extremely enticing.

You get the exact same 10.5-inch AMOLED display, which is a huge plus, as well as 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and high-quality quad speakers. The battery is a little smaller, and the Snapdragon 670 processor isn't going to blow you away with performance, but those are fine trade-offs for a $250 price drop.

The entire body is a sleek metal rather than glass, which may not feel quite as high-end but helps the Tab S5e be extremely light for its size at just 399 g (0.88 lb). That makes it great for media consumption and handheld use in ways the Tab S4 isn't — but you can still attach a hardware keyboard and jump into DeX desktop mode to get some serious work done just as well.

    Pros:

    • Super light for its size
    • Large high-quality screen
    • Quad speakers
    • Optional hardware keyboard cover
    • Productivity features including DeX Desktop

    Cons:

    • Not as powerful as Galaxy Tab S4
    • No stylus support

Powerful and Affordable — Huawei MediaPad M5 8.4

The MediaPad M5 8.4 isn't going to blow you away with amazing speakers or a class-leading display like the Galaxy Tab S4, nor does it have a companion stylus or a keyboard. But it has excellent build quality and great performance — plus, a Quad HD display.

Though Huawei makes a larger model (and even a Pro model that does support a pressure-sensitive stylus), the MediaPad M5 8.4 is the perfect size for comfortable, casual browsing and play. And the price is right for what it offers.

    Pros:

    • Great performance
    • Solid build quality
    • Good size for one-handed use
    • Good value considering its capabilities

    Cons:

    • Display doesn't match Samsung's quality
    • Software is lacking tablet optimizations

Big on a Small Budget — Amazon Fire HD 10

The Amazon Fire HD 10 is one of those deals that's almost too good to pass up if you're after a device with a large screen but a small price tag. It's simply the best big Android tablet for doing the basics, from watching movies and TV shows to browsing and playing some casual games.

The big caveat to keep in mind with an Amazon Fire tablet is that you don't get the Google Play Store or Google's great apps and services — instead, you'll rely on the Amazon App Store, which has a dramatically limited app selection. But for this price and what you're likely to do with it, that's an okay trade-off for most.

    Pros:

    • Exceptional value for this size
    • Solid display
    • Amazon's apps get the basics done
    • Fun color options available

    Cons:

    • No access to Google Play apps
    • Cheap-feeling plastic body

Cheap as it Gets — Amazon Fire HD 8

Amazon also makes the best super-inexpensive Android tablet available, the Fire HD 8. At $80 with 16GB of storage, it's an amazing deal. The smaller size makes it easy to toss in a bag and carry around or give to a child. And it's also light and easy to hold in one hand, making it good for reading.

Like the Fire HD 10 it doesn't have the Google Play Store or Google apps, but you're even more likely to look past that when you're spending under $100 on a tablet. This is a great choice for media consumption, browsing, or handing to your kids.

    Pros:

    • Small enough for kids to use
    • Fun color choices
    • Gets all of the basics done
    • Almost unbelievable price

    Cons:

    • Low-quality screen
    • Cheap-feeling plastic build
    • No access to Google Play apps

    Bottom line

The number of great Android tablet options is limited, but there are a few that are worthy of recommending. The best possible Android tablet experience comes from Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 with its high-end materials, great screen, capable software, and hardware keyboard support.

The Tab S4 is too expensive for many tablet buyers, but Samsung also makes a great alternative in the Galaxy Tab S5e. For $250 less, you're getting the same core experience and productivity features, in a lighter overall package, but with a few shortcomings in specs and frills.

For those who don't need every bell and whistle under the sun, the Amazon Fire HD 10 and Fire HD 8 offer a good media experience without costing you an arm and a leg — so long as you can live without Google Play services. If you need a bit more from your tablet but still want it in a handheld package, the MediaPad M5 8.4 won't leave you disappointed either.

  • How to Hem Jeans Without a Sewing Machine

Buying jeans can be challenging as many brands can be quite long no matter how tall you are. Tailoring is usually a necessity. If you don't own a sewing machine that doesn't mean you need to find a seamstress. Hand sewing with a needle and thread can provide a professional-looking hem with minimal sewing skills needed.

    Materials

This technique requires no cutting of the jean legs and the original hem is left exposed and useable.

    • Jeans to be shortened
    • Measuring tape
    • Existing jeans, optional
    • Straight pins
    • Sewing needle
    • Matching thread
    • Scissors
    • Iron

    Method

The stitching photo was done using thick, red thread for better visual clarity. Sewing should be done using standard sewing thread in a color that matches the jean fabric.

    1. With a tape measure, measure the inseam of a favorite pair of jeans that fit just right or measure the inseam of the person who will be wearing the jeans to the desired length. Measure the inseam of new jeans to be shortened.
    2. Subtract the desired length from the new jean's length to determine the amount that needs to be shortened. Divide this number in half. Example: If the amount that needs to be shortened is 2", then the divided number will be 1".
    3. Fold up the cuff of a right-side-out jean leg. Measure from the top, stitched edged of the existing hem to the fold of the cuff. Adjust the fold until it matches the divided measurement of the previous step. Matching the side seams, pin the cuff all the way around the jean leg to hold in place. Note: The existing jean hem is not included in the measurements.
    4. Thread a hand-sewing needle with thread that matches your jean fabric. Backstitch around the leg through both layers and just above the top edge of the existing hem. Knot and finish off where the ends meet.
    5. Slip the folded cuff inside the pant leg and fold the original hem down. Iron the cuff and hem flat.
    6. If needed, tack the folded cuff on the inside of the jean leg to prevent it from dropping down. There is no need to cut away the excess of the cuff.

Hints and Tips for Hemming Jeans

No matter whether you purchase your jeans new or pick them up at the local thrift store, you will want to get your money's worth. Pant leg styles and the wearer's needs should be taken into account. The following are a few things to consider when hemming.

    • Straight-leg jeans are the best for this method, but jeans with a slight flare can also be hemmed effectively. Wide flares should only have a small amount shortened.
    • As children grow, they tend to shoot up quicker than they grow out. Get more life from their jeans by pulling out the stitches and dropping the hem length as needed.
    • If the hem is never going to be let down again, you can cut excess fabric from the cuff. Cut no closer than 1/2" from the new stitched hem line.

     Sewing Machine Method

If you like the idea of keeping the original hem but would like the convenience of a sewing machine, by all means, set up your machine. Use a heavy-duty machine needle and a long stitch length. Sew slowly and carefully so as not to sew the jean legs closed.

  • Alternative Fuels for Cars

Alternative fuels for cars are growing in number. These fuels are not traditional oil/gas fueled vehicles, but vehicles that run on something else. Many car manufacturers, scientists and even every day citizens are looking for as many unique ways to fuel vehicles as possible, to reduce the world's dependency on fossil fuels.

Alternative Fuels for Cars and Other Uses

An alternative fuel is any type of fuel not made of petroleum. The United States Department of Energy monitors fuels manufactured and recognizes some as beneficial and usable.

    • Alcohol Based Fuels: Alcohol based fuels include ethanol and methanol. Ethanol comes from fermented and distilled corn. This is one of the most widely available alternative fuels currently in use.
    • Compressed Natural Gas: Compressed natural gas (CNG) is another recognized alternative fuel. This fuel choice is comprised of natural gas under high pressure. It does produce greenhouse gases, but at a far lower even than other fuel sources. Vehicles powered by CNG are in use in South America and Europe.
    • Electricity: Electric powered cars receive power from fuel cells. These vehicles have an electric motor, which produces lower emissions than gasoline based vehicles. Some electric vehicles are limited in how fast they go and how far they can travel, as they are dependent on their battery limits.
    • Hydrogen: Hydrogen vehicles are fuel cell powered. The chemical hydrogen reacts with oxygen to product electricity and water. The electricity produced powers the vehicle. Many of these vehicles are still in development to make them more affordable and safer to use.
    • Liquefied Natural Gas: Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas at a very low temperature, which makes it easier to transport. By liquefying natural gas, the gas reduces in volume significantly. LNG produces less pollution but is expensive to produce and needs to be stored in cryogenic tanks to for moving.
    • Liquefied Petroleum Gas: Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is an alternative fuel made of a mixture of hydrocarbon gases. It is a mixture of propane and butane. It is a low carbon emitting fuel, emitting 30 percent less than coal and 50 percent less than electricity generated by coal.
    • Coal Based Liquids: Coal to liquids is a term used to describe the process of converting solid coal into a liquid form. This liquid is fuel, which can be in use as gasoline, and diesel fuels. The similarities of coal-based gasoline to petroleum allow for liquefied coal fuels can be in current vehicles. While still a fossil fuel, coal is more readily available within the United States.
    • Biodiesel: Biodiesel is similar to diesel fuels, but it is from plant oils or animal fats. Biodiesel burns cleaner than petroleum based diesel. It is also biodegradable and nontoxic. New models of light and heavy-duty diesel vehicles can run on biodiesel.

    Cost and Availability of Fuels

To use any of the alternative fuels for cars, the fuel must be readily available. Vehicles must be available that run on the alternative fuel. In addition, the costs must be affordable to produce and then purchase these fuels.

GreenerChoices.org provides a comparison of the costs of various alternative fuels and their availability. It also provides a station finder, so individuals can find where the alternative fuel is available to them. The pros and cons of each fuel is detailed.

Costs for alternative fuels are important to consider if purchasing one of these vehicles.

    • Biodiesel: Grades B2-5, B20 and B100 are available. B2-5 cost $2.81 per gallon in 2005 nationally. B100 cost $3.40 per gallon.
    • Ethanol: Ethanol was at $2.41 per gallon in 2005.
    • Hybrid Electric Vehicles: These vehicles use electricity as well as gasoline. The cost of gasoline in 2005 was $2.77 per gallon.
    • Natural Gas: Natural gas cost for alternative vehicles was about $2.12 per gallon in 2005 (the equivalent of a gallon of gas).
    • Propane: Propane cost $2.56 per gallon in 2005.

Alternative fuels for cars often are in line with gasoline prices, or may be lower. While some fuel sources are still in development, others, like biodiesel and ethanol are in use more readily.

  • What's the vital photography equipment for beginners?

Delving into the world of photography can be intimidating for a first timer. What type of camera should I buy? What else do I need? What is zoom? What is macro? Relax. Here's a quick guide to get you started.

First, let's look at the camera. You can choose to go with either an SLR or point-and-shoot. Each camera has its benefits. Digital SLRs use interchangeable lenses that give you flexibility for different types of photography whereas point-and-shoots have fixed lenses and are generally easier to use (and less expensive). For example, an entry level SLR like the Nikon D3000, which includes an 18-55mm lens, will run you around $600 compared to a decent point-and-shoot like the Nikon Coolpix L110, which costs about $200. If you're looking for something for general picture-taking, a good point-and-shoot will suffice. If sports and action photography is more what you have in mind, you may want to spend the extra money on an SLR.

Consider an additional lens if you do buy an SLR. Certain lenses allow you to take different types of photos. For instance, if taking landscapes is your forté, you might want a wide-angle lens [source: Sheffers]. Or you might be interested in a macro lens for close-ups of flowers or a telephoto zoom lens for capturing wildlife from a safe distance. Before spending that extra money, look at the capabilities of the lens that comes with your camera. You might be surprised at what your SLR can already do.

You'll also need a memory card to store photos on. The cards depend on the camera you buy. Most point-and-shoots use Secure Digital cards, whereas SLRs tend to take CompactFlash. The larger the size, the more photos the card can store before you'll need to download them. If you plan on taking a lot of photos between each transfer to your computer, buy a card that's at least 2 GB.

Other items you'll need are a camera bag, lens filters for an SLR and cleaning cloths. Find a bag with ample storage for what you plan to use with your camera. If you buy an SLR, get a bag with storage room for additional lenses. Filters will screen out UV light, which improves image quality, and they also protect the camera lens.

Your final item may be a beginner's guide to photography. Two options are "Digital SLR Cameras & Photography for Dummies" by David. D. Busch or "How to Photograph Absolutely Everything" by Tom Ang. These types of books teach you how to use the various settings on cameras and how to get the most out of your photography.

  • American Girl Dolls and Toys

It started with a simple book series featuring three girls: Samantha, Kirsten and Molly. Each grew up in a different time period, and each had exciting adventures to share with young readers. Stories included unique historical references that educated young girls on how life was during a different era. Today, the American Girl collection has expanded to include more female heroines and more avid fans. The stories and American Girl dolls and toys are must-haves for little girls and collectors alike.

    Meet the Historical Girls

Each girl in the American Girl series lives in a particular time period in American history. The following dolls from the original series have been retired:

    • Kirsten, a pioneer girl, was born in Sweden but settled in Minnesota with her family in the 1850s. She teaches girls that home can be anywhere and the value in learning to adapt to change.
    • Samantha, an orphan, lived with her wealthy grandmother in the early 1900s. Her friend Nellie helps teach her that life is not all about money, and the importance of helping others.
    • Felicity lived in colonial times in the 1770s and had to learn to get along with those, like her best friend Elizabeth, who did not agree on the state of America's independence.

There are many American Girl heroines still available for little girls to learn from today. Dolls that can currently be purchased in the American Girl store include:

    • Addy, the first African-American doll, lived during the Civil War in the 1860s. She escaped slavery and learned the importance of relying on family during difficult times.
    • Molly lived during World War II and began to understand the importance of sacrifice to reach a goal as she worked to show her patriotism by helping during the war.
    • Kit learned what it was like to go without while living during the Great Depression.
    • Rebecca, who is Jewish, lived in the early 1900s and had to learn to blend her family's old Jewish traditions with newer traditions and desires.
    • Marie-Grace and Cecile lived in New Orleans in the 1850s. One white and the other African-American, they formed an unlikely friendship as they cared for others.
    • Josefina, the first Hispanic-American girl, lived in the 1820s and had to deal with the difficulties that came with losing her mother and making new memories.
    • Kaya, a Native American, learned about being a leader as she dreamed about leading her tribe during the 1760s.
    • Julie lived in San Francisco in the 1970s and learned to handle change as her parents went through a divorce.
    • Caroline lived in New York during the War of 1812 and dreamed of being captain of a ship, just like her father.

    Girl of the Year

Starting in 2001, American Girl began featuring an annual "girl of the year" doll to represent today's modern girl. These dolls are available for purchase for only one year, after which they are retired and a new one is introduced. Young girls will enjoy collecting each year's edition, as well as playing online interactive games featuring the dolls. A few of the dolls who have been named "girl of the year" include:

    • McKenna, 2012, who is a skilled gymnast but struggles with reading.
    • Chrissa, 2009, who took a stand against bullies
    • Nikki, 2007, who loved to volunteer and trained service dogs.
    • Marisol, 2006, who loved to dance and used it to cope with changes in her life.
    • Kailey, 2002, who liked to speak out about causes she believed in.

    My American Girl

In addition to the main dolls, the series includes the My American Girl collection which allows girls to design a doll to look just like them. Girls can customize the hair and eye color of their dolls, choose a specific skin color and whether or not the doll has freckles and even choose the kind of hairstyle the doll has. Once the basic doll has been chosen, girls can choose an outfit and add accessories such as earrings, glasses, or braces, and even give her a pet. The doll also comes with a subscription to Innerstar University, a place to interact with other girls and their dolls, play games and learn in a fun online world. American Girl Accessories

Part of the fun of having an American Girl doll is all of the accessories available to purchase. These include clothing, furniture, accessories for the doll's hair and special accessories related to the doll's interests. Most notably, girls can purchase coordinating outfits so they and their dolls can dress alike.

    Pets

Also available are pets for the American Girls to adopt. The pet collection includes five dogs named Coconut, Meatloaf, Honey, Pepper, and Sugar, and four cats named Praline, Ginger, Inkpot, and Licorice. There is also a service dog set that comes with a training vest and dog treats. There are multiple accessories that go along with the pets, including:

    • Carriers
    • Pet beds
    • Hiking sets
    • Bath sets
    • Rain gear
    • Pet show set

    American Girl Books

While the dolls and their accessories are extremely popular, the American Girl series comes to life with its books. The books are designed to teach girls valuable lessons, empower them to be strong women and, with the historical books, pique their interest in history.

    Historical Fiction

Each historical doll is featured in a series of books based on her life. The first book in the series is usually a meet the character book, for example Meet Addy. In addition the series typically includes a book about changes, a book about learning a lesson, a happy birthday book, a saves the day book and a mystery book. Books in each character's series may be purchased individually or as a set.

    Contemporary Fiction

As the American Girl collection has grown, it has started to include more contemporary fiction. The collection features books based on the Girl of the Year, along with other stories featuring characters based on the dolls. Some of the books offer multiple endings and allow girls to make choices as they read through. Special content related to the books is also available online through Innerstar University.

    Crafts

The American Girl collection includes multiple activity books and craft sets for girls. They range from question and answer books to craft projects to inspire interaction with their dolls, creating friendship bracelets and making paper art.

    Setting a Good Example

All of the American Girl dolls and toys are focused on empowering girls and teaching them positive lessons. They encourage girls to stand up for what they believe in, take on challenges and learn to handle difficult emotions. The dolls do not wear skimpy clothing or act inappropriately. In the stories they may occasionally misbehave or make a mistake, but they always learn a lesson as a result. While girls will enjoy playing with the dolls and reading the stories, parents can rest easy knowing they are learning valuable lessons at the same time.
