  • Free Wooden Toy Plans

Toys are a great way to help young ones learn numbers and colors while enhancing motor skills. Making toys can be just as enjoyably educational for parents as well!

    Simple Toys

When choosing toy designs, usually the easiest to build with the fewest mechanical linkages will last many generations. Simple Toys that have stood the test of time are usually sturdy wooden creations that are easily replicated:

    • Animated pull toys
    • Trains and tracks
    • Building blocks

Choosing which wood to use is important for durability, and you can save time by purchasing common items like wheels and blocks instead of trying to cut them yourself. The following toys are only guidelines to let you and your child's imagination create the unexpected, but help to use the attached printables is available.

    Wooden Puzzle

Wooden puzzles allow for hours of play that encourage logical thinking and shape, color, and pattern recognition. This puzzle uses one of your own photos, so it's easy to customize it. The trick to cutting this simple geometric puzzle is to use a very thin blade so you can make the sharp turns necessary for a tight puzzle fit. You will still have some play between pieces, but it won't be too noticeable. The printable includes plans, instructions, and materials lists.

    Materials

    • 1 Sheet 5mm poplar plywood cut to 8 inches by 10 inches
    • 1 8 oz. jar matte gel medium
    • 1 home-printed photo of your choice cut to 8 inches by 10 inches
    • 80 grit sandpaper
    • Bristle paintbrush
    • Foam paintbrush
    • Clean white rags
    • 00 grade steel wool

    Tools

    • Coping saw with blade
    • Orbital sander
    • X-acto knife

    Procedure

    1. Transfer the attached printable to the wood and cut with a coping saw. Sand the front and the back with the sander.
    2. Sand interlocking areas by hand. Clean all pieces with a bristle brush to remove dust.
    3. Interlock all pieces and apply a thick layer of gel with the foam brush.
    4. Press the photo onto the gel surface picture-side down. Gently smooth out bubbles.
    5. Lay a large cutting board over the entire surface and press evenly. Remove the board.
    6. Let set for 24 hours. Soak rags in water, wring, and place them over the photo until the image shows through the wet paper.
    7. Rub the photo with the rag to remove the paper leaving the image on the wood. Buff with the steel wool to polish.
    8. Use a knife to separate pieces if necessary. Enjoy!

    Rubber Band Trebuchet

Who doesn't love a catapult? Kids love to fling stuff across the room, but it's good to have a governor on what can be thrown. A simple rubber band can limit what this mighty beast will throw without losing some of the thrill. Download the attached printable for a supply list, step-by-step instructions, and plans.

    Materials

    • 2 wood blocks 5 ½" x 2 ½" x 1" (D, E)
    • 3 wood dowels 3/16" x 2 ½" (A, B, C)
    • 1 balsa plank ¾" x ½" x 7" (F)
    • 1 8-32 x 5" bolt
    • 1 8-32 nut
    • 8 #8 washers
    • 1 #4 screw eye hook
    • 1 plastic egg shell
    • 1 orthodontic rubber band
    • Super glue

    Tools

    • Drill with bits
    • Wrenches
    • Rotary tool with bits
    • Clamps

    Procedure

    1. Drill holes A and B halfway through block D, one inch from the front edge
    2. Drill hole C halfway through block D, one inch from rear edge.
    3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for block E making sure to mirror Block D for dowel insertion.
    4. Square blocks D and E with the dowel holes facing each other and clamp the blocks. Drill a hole for the bolt through the center of blocks D and E.
    5. Drill a hole in plank F one inch from the end. Screw the eye hook into front of plank F nearest the hole. F A C B PLASTIC EGG PIECE FRONT DOWELS
    6. Press dowels ABC into holes of block D and E to form the outer cage of the catapult.
    7. Align the center hole in blocks DE with the hole in plank F and push the bolt through adding washers to center plank F. Attach a nut to the bolt and tighten. Ensure plank F moves freely.
    8. Trim the bottom half of the egg shell with the rotary tool to form a cup. Glue the shell to the top rear of plank F.
    9. Thread the rubber band through the eye hook and bottom dowel. Launch offensive!

The rubber band should never be slack throughout the entire movement of the arm, and ammunition should not be overly heavy. Use items such as popcorn, tape balls, packing peanuts, etc. Using lightweight wood for the throwing arm lets you put somewhat heavier items in the basket, but the rubber band will prohibit children from causing too much damage while playing on their own.

    More Challenging Toys

The simple toys above can be made in a day or two but if you want to test your skills, there are some great free ideas out there that will wow your kids and neighbors.

    • This pictorial instruction for a rideable crane can keep children busy for hours, and the combination of wooden and mechanical elements make for a fun build, as well.
    • Allcrafts has full plans and instructions for almost any toy or craft imaginable, and it's all free. Some of their woodworking plans are scanned from original documents, while others are made by people just like you. While it's fun to imagine building some of these creations on your own, it's more fun to pull a child on your lap and browse the possibilities.

    Fun With Tools

Purchased with good intentions, the results of either inexperience or unsuccessful endeavors may have prematurely sentenced good tools to the shelf. Practice, and good blades, makes for more successful cuts, so make sure you get a lot of both and don't be afraid to sacrifice one awkward project for a beautiful second.

While the work may seem to be extensive with do-it-yourself projects like these when buying one off the shelf is inexpensive, it is the interaction with your child of choosing, building, and playing that will reward both parties. The example you set will last generations as your children teach their children to explore the possibilities of bringing their own imaginative toys to life.

    Building Family Ties

A simple wooden toy built with child and parent interaction helps increase the familial bond. Toys encourage a learning environment while creating a simple playtime activity that the child can learn to accomplish themselves and creating the toys with your children can be very fulfilling. The fun of watching a child's confidence grow as they master the toy crafted within the home is just as fun as making the toys themselves.

  • Children's Ride On Construction Toys

Children's ride on construction toys are a longtime favorite for outdoor play. They offer younger children the opportunity to be independent and to learn how to do things on their own. The toys are great for playing in the sand, dirt, or just riding around the yard or park.

Types of Children's Ride On Construction Toys

There are several different types of these toys, as they can range from a simple excavator that is powered by children's feet to a complex tractor that runs on battery power. The complexity of the toy will directly reflect on the price and age restrictions of the ride on toy.

    Manually Operated Toys

Manually operated toys are ones in which children must use their own power to make the toy move. They are just as simple as wooden toy trucks. Sometimes the toy will have pedals to use or children will need to use their feet to make them move. These ride on toys are less expensive in price than ones that are battery powered. They come in a variety of different construction vehicles such as tractors, excavators, and backhoes.

    Battery-Powered Toys

Battery-powered ride on toys are more expensive and more complex in nature. They are usually recommended for older children ages 3 and up, whereas manually operated ones are considered safe for children as young as 18 months. These toys need a battery source, usually a 6-volt or 12-volt battery. The child rides on the toy and simply has to press a button or turn a lever to make the toy start moving. There are usually sound effects and movable accessories found on these toys as well. Battery-powered ride on toys are found in a variety of construction equipment such as tractors, backhoes, and front-end loaders.

    Safety Precautions

Whenever a child is using a ride on toy, certain safety precautions should be followed to ensure the safety of the child and other surrounding people. The following are basic safety precautions that should be followed with all children's ride on construction toys:

    • Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for ages and weights. They are put in place to keep children safe.
    • Never leave a child unattended on a ride on toy. This is especially true for battery-powered toys as a child has the potential to get seriously injured on these toys.
    • Teach children how to ride the toy properly and correct improper use. Improper use of a construction ride on toy can result in harm to a child or someone nearby.
    • Keep all ride on toys far away from stairs, swimming pools, steep hills, and the street.
    • When a child uses a battery-powered ride on toy, the area should be free of any obstacles or potential dangers as some of these toys have the potential for going quite fast.
    • Inspect the toy on a regular basis for any damage, missing parts, or potential safety hazards.
    • While riding battery-powered ride on toys, children should wear a sturdy helmet for protection.

  • Who Invented Legos

One day a child may ask you who invented LEGOs, and now you can be equipped to answer, thanks to the information found below on Mr. Ole Kirk Christiansen, also known as the forefather of LEGOs.

    Who Invented LEGOs?

LEGOs are quite possibly one of the most popular and best-selling toys on the planet. From the classic colored bricks that form houses and shops, to the preschool-friendly Duplo and preteen- intriguing Bionicles, LEGOs continue to impress and amuse new generations of children. However, how exactly did they get their start? In other words, who invented LEGOs?

The answer is found in a man named Ole Kirk Christiansen, who invented today's recognizable LEGO brick in the late 1940s.

    About Ole Kirk Christiansen

Beginning his carpentry career in 1916, Christiansen built houses and furniture for local farmers. Hailing from Denmark, his business was based there. In the 1930s, he decided to branch out and make toys out of wood for the local children, and these included pull toys and piggy banks. He found he had such a passion and joy in his heart for children's items that he left carpentry and went into the toy business full time. At the time, Denmark was experiencing a depression, and while furniture sales were suffering, the toy market was far from declining.

He selected the name LEGO out of two Danish words that mean "to play well", and the popularity of his new toy was soon found all over Denmark. He created the first plastic bricks in 1946 and labeled them "automatic binding bricks". Originally manufactured in only red and white plastic, the first LEGO set hit toy store shelves in 1955 and was called "Town Plan". It doubled as a creative way to teach children the importance of neighborhood and traffic safety, and the kids bought into the concept. Learning and playing came hand in hand as LEGO sets flew off of shelves. Christiansen continued to come up with new sets of LEGOs that would remain consistent in teaching children important life lessons. This passion and love for children lasted until he passed away. The company is now run by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, who is the grandson of the great LEGO founder.

    LEGOs Today

In asking who invents new LEGOs today, the answer is found in large teams of manufacturers, designers, conceptualists and marketing professionals who study what kids want and are interested in, thus working those discoveries into the world of LEGO.

Today LEGOs are available in over 3,000 varieties of pieces, and come in 75 different colors. This is a far cry from the original red and white basic brick set, and exemplifies the LEGO company's continued desire to improve, invent and innovate.

Today over 400 million kids, teens and adults have enjoyed LEGOs, and over 400 billion bricks have been produced over the company's many decades in business. The soaring popularity continues today as new generations discover these adorable and innovative little bricks that open up a whole new world of imagination. You can visit LEGO's official site for more information.

    For Adults

Another version of LEGOs has been invented in recent years. It's known as LEGO SeriousPlayand is designed to help professional adults problem solve and experience improvements in business performance. Now not only children are invited into the world of LEGOs, as the company continues to find new ways to invent and explore every aspect of life with their creative brick building.

  • Kid's Building Blocks

When it comes to kids' toys, blocks are about as educational and fun as they can get. Children can spend hours building castles, cities, houses, and roads, using only this simple toy and their imaginations. From wooden unit blocks to huge cardboard versions, the varieties are nearly endless.

    Unit Blocks

Unit blocks are wooden blocks that follow a pattern in their sizes. Typically, the longest size is about a foot long by about four inches wide. Then there are blocks that are half this length, a quarter of this length, and an eighth of this length. Because of the sizes, unit blocks are great for learning math, and they're also just plain fun to use in building. These blocks are ideal for children from three to eight years. The heavy weight of these wood blocks and the small size of some of the pieces make them inappropriate for younger children.

Melissa and Doug Standard Unit Blocks are a great option, since they come with their own storage crate. They are constructed of durable hardwood and will last for many years. Lakeshore Learning also offers a huge, deluxe set of hardwood unit blocks, complete with a 50-year guarantee. This set features a number of arches and columns for making interesting architectural constructions.

    Alphabet Blocks

Alphabet blocks are some of the most common childhood toys, and they've been popular for generations. These blocks feature letters on some sides and pictures on others. Children can use them to build structures, learn stacking, or even begin to read and spell. These blocks come in a variety of materials, including wood, plastic, and foam. They are a versatile, fun toy right from the start. If you're considering buying alphabet blocks for a baby, make sure the size of the blocks is large enough to prevent them from being a choking hazard.

    Foam Blocks

While wood blocks have a classic appeal they can be heavy and noisy. If you're looking for something a little softer, foam is a great alternative. Foam blocks come in bright, attractive colors, and they have no sharp edges or splinters. They're also quieter when knocked down and light enough for little hands to lift them. These blocks come in a wide range of sizes. Typically the size of this type of block will dictate the appropriate age range. For babies, stick to sets with larger blocks.

Sensory Edge has a deluxe set of durable foam blocks which includes arches, columns, and a number of other fun shapes. They come with their own storage bag and are best for kids over the age of three. The Creativity Institute offers a set of jumbo foam blocks that are fun for babies and toddlers. These blocks are brightly-colored and big enough for kids to climb over

    Plastic Blocks

Plastic blocks, which often feature interlocking parts, are fun building toys for preschoolers and older children. The size of the blocks will dictate the age of the child, since it's easier for little hands to manage larger blocks. Small blocks allow older kids to construct elaborate structures.

Lego has a long history of producing quality children's blocks, and sets like the Lego Kingdom encourage fine motor skills and pretend play. Younger kids can enjoy Duploproducts as well.

    Cardboard Blocks

Durable and inexpensive, cardboard building blocks are another fun option. These blocks are typically large in size, allowing kids to create structures and interact with those structures using their whole bodies. They're perfect for making tunnels, forts, or pretend houses. Light enough that kids won't get hurt if their structures collapse, these blocks are perfect for kids two years and older.

Melissa and Doug Jumbo Cardboard Blocks are a great choice, especially since they come in bright primary colors. Lillian Vernon has a great set of cardboard blocks, available in primary or pastel colors. There's also an expansion set of architectural pieces to add to your basic blocks.

    Buy Several Kinds

With so many types of block sets available, parents may wonder what to buy. Because most blocks are so sturdy and can be passed down from child to child, there's no reason not to buy several different kinds. Start with fabric blocks that teach colors and then move onto wooden blocks, with letters and without, to encourage letter recognition, reading, and imaginative play. Children can enjoy blocks from before they're walking long into their school years.

  • Top Electronic Toys for Kids

Regardless of your child's age, there is almost certainly an electronic toy that will captivate his or her interest. Even though some of the toys are pricey, you can find a high-quality toy for less than $50 especially if you scour the Web for online deals or hit the clearance racks after the holiday season. These seven options range in price from $40 to $150. The toys on this list were selected for their kid-appeal and overall quality.

    1. InnoTab 3S Plus Learning Tablet

The InnoTab 3S Plus Learning Tablet by VTech has landed on Top 10 lists by Cool Mom Tech, Gizmag, and Dr. Toy. This electronic toy, designed for children ages 3-9, is a tablet complete with a kid-friendly and kid-safe Wi-Fi connection. Children can explore their creative sides with installed photography, art and video programs or expand the capabilities of the tablet with the more than 600 available cartridges. Included in the tablet is a wish list where children can send notifications directly to their parents' email addresses. The tablet costs $40-$60 depending on model and includes a rechargeable power pack.

    2. Zoomer Robots

Kidzworld describes the Zoomer robot dog as the 'ultimate family pet' and the more you play with the electronic dog, the more realistic the pet's behavior mirrors a real dog's. The electronic pet responds to voice commands, which means you can teach him a variety of tricks, and the sensors even let him know when you are scratching his belly. Since the more a child plays with the pup the more the pup learns, you can be certain that your child will have a new best friend in no time. Zoomer charges via a USB cable and has a flexible tail, LED eyes that blink and track movement, and his rotational core lets him roll over. Zoomer puppies are designed for children five years and older. They sell for around $90.

    3. Sky Viper Camera Drone

Bring out the spy in your pre-teen or teen with the Sky Viper Camera Drone. Chosen by Toy Insideras one of the Top 12 cool tech toys for children, this high-tech, hobby grade, four-blade remote control copter will give your child the ability to take photos and videos from above. The toy's video capability is impressive as it can take quality footage from as high as 100 feet in the air. Unless already skilled with R/C flying machines it takes a little while to master the craft, but the remote control lets you adjust the flight sensitivity to beginner, intermediate, or advanced. Once the initial basics of flying and changing directions are mastered the operator can practice stunts like forward and backward flips. The drone comes with rechargeable batteries, remote control and four replacement blades (in case of a crash). It sells for about $80.

    4. My Friend Cayla

MSN places this doll on their top tech toys list. At first glance, the toy looks like a typical 18-inch tall blonde doll but when Cayla begins to speak, her uniqueness stands out. Cayla is an interactive doll that connects to the Web via an iOS or Android smart-device running the doll's app. The app utilizes voice recognition to respond to what's being said. Cayla is capable of millions of phrases and will even search the internet (from sources deemed age-appropriate) to deliver the correct answers to questions. She can play a number of games and even help your child with homework. The doll costs about $150 and is designed for children ages 3 and up.

    5. LeapBand

For a wrist band concept designed to get your child moving, try the LeapBand by LeapFrog. Named one of Dr. Toy's 10 Best Active Toys, this $30 interactive device uses an electronic pet to encourage your child to increase physical activity while letting the child track his or her own progress. The band includes an interactive "pet" - an on-screen animal that encourages children to move around and enjoy doing so. The pet is customizable, and the toy comes with 14 challenges already loaded. Up to 36 other challenges can be added through LeapFrog Connect. Parental controls can be set for quiet times, such as when kids are in school or eating dinner. The LeapBand is recommended for ages four to seven.

    6. Ozobot

If your child is even slightly interested in coding or computer programming, the Ozobot is a great way to expand on that interest. USA Today named this Pac-Man like robotic game piece one of the top 10 tech toys from the 2014 Toy Fair. The robot glides across a piece of paper or game board and follows intricately created mazes which are designed by your child. A maze is created by using a typical permanent marker to draw the lines and then the robot, which uses a couple of micro-motors and an optical sensor, reacts to the drawing and makes its way through the maze. Several apps can also be downloaded to make Ozobot even more entertaining. The toy sells for about $60.

    7. Roll-Up Piano

Ranked number three on PC Mag's Top 10 Digital Musical Instruments, the Roll-Up Piano has several things going for it. It requires no batteries, is durable, and allows children to create and record their own music. Since the piano is USB-based, music can be created and uploaded to a computer where it can be further tweaked if desired. The device comes with a learning CD, 100 prerecorded rhythms, eight percussion instruments, and tempo adjustment. The 49-key piano sells for less than $50.

    Big Business

Choosing electronic toys can be difficult for parents because there are so many new items constantly being introduced. This is because the U.S. toy market is huge, currently estimated at $22 billion annually. Youth electronics currently commands about $429 million of those sales. As long as the toy is age-appropriate and fun to play with, your child will quickly pick up on how to use and enjoy it.
