  • Cell Phone Trends

Staying on top of cell phone trends can almost be a full-time job in and of itself. Eric Ronaydoesn't quite understand the appeal of having the hottest new mobile phone, but he seems to be in the minority. We want new toys and we want them now.

    Current Cell Phone Trends

Just as what's fashionable in clothing changes from season to season, cell phone trends evolve and change all the time as well. Here are some of the biggest current cell phone trends and we fully expect the mobile phone industry to continue along this path at least in the short term. Then again, who knows what kind of cell phones we will all have five, 10 or 20 years from now.

    Slider Phones

Not that long ago, people were jumping all over the flip phone craze, perhaps best recognized by the unique Motorola RAZR phones that were released a few years ago. People loved the clamshell form factor and they really appreciated the slim profile that these handsets offered. Fast forward to today and we look to Samsung cell phones as being among the industry leaders, pushing the slider cell phone into the mainstream.

There are many advantages to the slider form factor, because they typically offer a larger main diplay than their flip phone counterparts, while maintaining an equally compact footprint. There are also HTC smartphones that slide horizontally to reveal QWERTY keyboards, again offering a larger display than something like the Motorola Q or BlackBerry Curve.

    Smartphones

Speaking of smartphones, it seems that there is a growing interest in smartphone software, not only among the business community, but also among the general public. This is because many people are tired of restricting themselves to the basic suite of applications preloaded on their phones. When you look at the Windows Mobile or Symbian platform, there are innumerable third-party applications available that significantly expand the functionality of mobile phones.

The "home" screen on smartphones is also a major plus, because it grants the user instant access to pertinent information like missed calls, upcoming appointments, and other key functions. Devices like the Apple iPhone offer much more versatility than more conventional mobile phones. We want to do more with our phones these days.

    Touchscreen Displays

The Apple iPhone isn't the first phone to offer a full touchscreen display, but it is certainly being credited with bringing that feature into the mainstream. PocketPC phones have had touchscreens for some time now, but after the release of the iPhone, people have recognized the versatility of eschewing physical buttons in favor of virtual ones on a touchscreen. From the HTC Touch to the LG Prada, there are touchscreen phones coming from nearly every manufacturer.

One of the most hotly anticipated touchscreen phones is the Verizon Voyager cell phone. This handset is the spiritual successor to the LG enV, featuring a full QWERTY keyboard on the inside and a large touchscreen on the outside. Nokia is reportedly working on a touchscreen technology (S60 Touch) that offers tactile feedback too.

    Multimedia: Music and Camera

Mobile phones aren't just for making phone calls. Mobile entertainment has become an important component to many cell phones and critical to this package as multimedia. Music phones like the Sony W580i merge the functionality of a phone with an MP3 player, whereas camera phones are taking pictures that are almost as good as standalone digital cameras. Staying connected means staying entertained.

In addition to music and pictures, mobile Web surfing is gaining in popularity. The Safari web browser on the iPhone is particularly powerful, even when compared against Pocket Internet Explorer on Windows Mobile devices.

    The Latest and Greatest

Cell phone trends are a tricky business, so you've got to keep your ear to the ground and pay attention to popular culture. On their way out are phones like the Motorola RAZR and on their way in are phones like the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide and Apple iPhone. Of all the trends, the one that is the most prominent is an obvious one: more functionality. We're a culture of wanting more of everything and cell phones are no exception.

  • What is Circle with Disney, how can it moderate kids' internet usage and how do you set it up?

No matter how responsible or communicative your children are, ensuring their online activity is safe and healthy is no easy matter.

For parents, this is a challenge on many levels. What content are children accessing? Which devices are they using to go online? What time of day are they connecting and how long are they spending at different activities?

While modern devices come with their own parental controls, these systems don’t speak to each other. Setting limits on access YouTube on a console can mean that children simply migrate to a different screen once this has been used up.

The Nintendo Switch may be leading the way with its ability to report on what children are playing, but when these limits are used up kids can simply move over to another console, such as an Xbox One or PlayStation 4.

That's where Circle with Disney comes in. It is a one-stop shop to control a family's internet usage at source. So here's everything you need to know about the cunning device, including how to set it up.

    What is Circle with Disney?

Circle with Disney is a physical box that wirelessly connects to your home network to monitor, control and report on internet activity.

It’s clever because it does this for all the devices you have in the house and can assign each device to different user-specific limits. Better still, like the Nintendo Switch’s parental controls, you control Circle from an app on your smartphone and get messages directly when limits are exceeded.

It can, therefore, enable control over specific devices in the home, such as those used predominantly by your children, without impacting on the internet abilities of parents' devices.

How does Circle with Disney work?

Plugging in and setting up a Circle with Disney box is an eye-opening experience. In a matter of days you can clearly see how long each family member is spending at different online activities no matter which devices they are using.

This information enables you to set up time limits for particular activities - YouTube, Xbox or Pinterest for example - or to block particular sites and services that are not appropriate. Some games can also be specifically limited - like Roblox, which has been really helpful in our family. Once the time is up for a particular user they get the message on their devices and need to ask parents for an extension.

Along with time limits on apps and websites, Circle can also specify bedtimes and off-times for each user. This is very useful for ensuring your kids don’t stay up too late, or get delayed checking Instagram in the morning before school.

Performance is good, with the system not slowing down the performance of your internet connection and proving itself super stable. One snag to date has been on the change from GMT to BST. Circle failed to update its clock and so the time-specific limits were out by an hour. The guide suggests that connecting a new user to the device with the new time is a workaround but we couldn’t get this to work. Instead, we had to set the limits back an hour in the app. This is likely to be resolved in the near future.

How to set up a Circle with Disney box

As with any new technology in the home, it’s essential you set up your Circle with Disney box correctly. So here’s the definitive guide for setting up Circle and reclaiming control of the devices and online services in your household.

Step 1: Unbox and plug in

Circle comes with simple instructions and is easy to set up. Take it out the box, plug it in via any USB power port and then connect to it via your smartphone or tablet.

Download the Circle app. Ensure this is the app called "Circle Home", don't just search on app stores for "Circle" as there are other, non-related apps called that.

Step 2: Connect to your network

The Circle Home app will detect your Circle hardware. If it doesn’t, press the button on top to reset it and turn it on. There should be a green light if it is functioning correctly.

The app will then prompt you to connect to the Circle hardware via the Wi-Fi connection on your device. Once that is done you are ready to set up devices and users.

    Step 3: Set up users

The next step is to go through your devices identifying each one, and naming them. This is particularly important if you have multiple tablets or phones in the home as you need to know which is which. This should also include games consoles, Smart TVs, family computers, as well as smartphones and tablets.

With each device named you can set up user profiles for the people in your family. Some time and planning is worthwhile here. You may want to set up all the children’s devices in one "Kids" profile as this ensures they don’t trade tablets and online time.

Alternatively, and this will depend on the age of your children, you may want to have different restrictions, bed times and off times for each of them. If this is the case you need to create their own profiles.

The final consideration here is if you are going to connect Circle to one of the rewards apps. This can grant them more online time for completing household chores or performance at school. If this would be useful you need to have separate profiles for each child to be able to apply rewards individually.

    Step 4: Check "Insights"

Once you have the basic settings established, it’s best to let your family use their devices for a few days to see how it works. This will provide valuable information on the "Insights" tab on how they are using their online time.

This information can be used to set additional limits to the apps and services that are appearing there as well as tweak limits on their online time.

Step 5: Set up "Off Time"

Once you have Circle set up as you want it, the Off Time settings can add a useful extra layer of control. For example, in the morning children will have plenty of their online allowance left but may be distracted on devices rather than getting ready for school.

Setting an Off Time for the hour before they leave for school is a convenient way to avoid this distraction and get them out the door on time.

    Step 7: Notifications

Whenever a time limit is reached or new device enters the home you are notified via a message on Circle. It’s worth ensuring these messages are forwarded to smartwatches and other devices to give you an instant heads up when something happens.

For example, when a child’s YouTube allowance for the day is consumed you will receive a message before they realise the limit has been hit. This enables parents to be one step ahead of children’s requests for more time.

    Step 8. Close loopholes

As the family gets used to having their online time mediated in this way there are inevitable loopholes that will emerge. Limiting a child from accessing YouTube on his or her iPad will naturally lead to them using the PC for this activity instead.

Ensuring you don’t have any devices unassigned to a user enables you to limit activity across the whole home. It can also be a nice way to ensure certain activities are enjoyed on screens in shared family spaces.

    Step 9. Guests and parents

While Circle will largely be used by parents to understand and control access to online services by their children, it can also be useful for adults in the home. Creating a parent user enables you to set limits to using the phone before bed or while enjoying weekend time together.

When other children come to visit the family, it’s a good idea to name their device and add it to a guests group. This not only ensures you understand what they are doing online with friends but also notifies you when any new devices enter the home.

    Do we recommend it?

Circle with Disney is unlike any other internet control service we’ve used. While it is possible to achieve similar functionality if you know how to dig into your router settings or customise complex user profiles, Circle offers all this in a simple and well thought out interface that anyone can set up.

Priced at £99 in the UK and $53 in the US currently, it’s not the cheapest way to control your family’s internet consumption but it does offer a lot of value. For parents, being so easy to set up, getting instant notifications and seeing their children’s online behaviour change overnight makes it worth its weight in gold.

  • External Wired Speaker Options for Cell Phones

The on-board speaker on a cell phone can only be so powerful, but external speakers can provide a much larger and fuller sound. Having the right external speaker to go along with a cell phone is a critical decision for any music lover, whether they're listening to tunes at home or taking the jam on the road. Many external speakers feature a standard 3.5mm stereo audio input jack; this can be used to connect the speakers to nearly all contemporary mobile phones the same way you would connect a set of headphones. This universal connectivity means that wired speakers will work with just about any mobile phone.

Four Wired Speakers Home or Office Use

If you enjoy listening to music stored on your cell phone at home or your office, the experience will be even more enjoyable when you have a great speaker to amplify the sound.

    Audioengine A5+

The Audioengine A5+ comes as a pair of premium powered speakers to suit a variety of musical styles and genres. Designed to work with a variety of iDevices like the iPhone, as well as with other smartphones, TVs, computers, or any other audio source, the A5+ provides great stereo sound to any room in your home. In addition to the pair of bookshelf speakers, the A5+ also features a remote control and a USB port to keep your smartphone charged while it is playing music through the provided auxiliary input jack.

Pricing: The black or white versions of the A5+ speakers have a retail price of $399, while the bamboo version costs $469.

    Harman Kardon Soundsticks III

Offering a very unique look, the Soundsticks III from Harman Kardon allow you to "listen to a work of art." Unlike a typical docking station where you get a single unit, the Soundsticks III is a three-component system providing a 2.1 audio configuration. This means you get two stereo speakers, plus one central downward-firing subwoofer, all of which boast a transparent appearance. Each stereo channel has four full-range transducers

Pricing: MSRP on the Soundsticks III is $170.

    M-Audio Studiophile AV 40

Providing a similar studio-like experience for audio aficionados, the M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 compact powered speakers provide a total power output of 40 watts, with 20 watts per channel. The speakers feature four-inch polypropylene-coated woofers and 3/4-inch silk dome tweeters that are ferrofluid-cooled. The magnetic shielding virtually eliminates any interference and the built-in volume dial on the front makes it easy to adjust the sound. Conveniently, the 3.5mm stereo input jack is also located in the front, making it easy to connect your phone.

Pricing: The retail price on the M-Audio AV 40 is $200.

    Edifier Exclaim e10

If you're looking for a pair of stereo speakers that make a statement, the Edifier Exclaim e10 Bi-Amped 2.0 speaker system could be a fantastic choice. The base of each of the stereo speakers is spherical in shape, containing the main three-inch woofer, while the vertical upper sections contain two one-inch tweeters and a 1x3-inch passive radiator for added sound production. The full integral digital sound processing provides excellent performance for any general of music with a total RMS output of 36 watts.

Pricing: The Edifier Exclaim e10 is listed at $100.

    Five Wired Portable Phone Speakers

The larger options above are best suited for the home or office, but it is also possible to carry around a smaller, portable speaker for sharing music on the go.

GOgroove Pal Bot Portable Android Speaker

Not all speakers have to be flat boxes or cylindrical towers. The GOgroove Pal Bot is a portable sound system that takes on the appearance of the Google Android character. Some people call him Andy and others refer to him as Bugdroid. In any case, the cute Android robot acts as a full-fledged speaker for your smartphone and it will even work with iPhones, Windows Phones, and other audio sources. At lower volumes, the battery can keep the music going for over 24 hours and the retractable audio cable keeps everything neat and tidy.

Pricing: Whether you go with the official-looking green or a less conventional blue, the GOgroove Pal Bot retails for around $40.

    Scosche boomCAN

An extremely affordable speaker that happens to be remarkably small too, the Scosche boomCAN comes in a number of different colors and features a rechargeable battery for up to 7 hours of continuous music playback. It measures less than two inches wide and under 2.5 inches tall, making it one of the smallest portable speakers for cell phones. The aluminum housing is lightweight, while also providing good durability. You can even link together multiple boomCAN speakers via the audio output jack for even bigger sound.

Pricing: The Scosche boomCAN is available for around $20.

    HMDX Burst Portable Speaker

Available in blue, grey, orange, purple or yellow, the HMDX Burst portable speaker features a convenient, retractable 3.5mm cord for connecting to your music-playing cell phone. The retractable cable is very convenient, as you don't have to bring along a loose audio cable. The rubberized soft exterior provides some protection and the rechargeable battery can last up to six hours.

Pricing: The HMDX Burst has a list price of just $25.

    Go-Anywhere Mini Speaker

Geared toward people who value a trendy, fashionable appearance, the Go-Anywhere Mini Speaker features a unique vase-like shape and can be used vertically with MP3 players, smartphones or any other audio source via its 3.5mm input jack. It comes in bold colors like pink magenta, orange and pool (aqua).

Pricing: The Go-Anywhere Mini Speaker retails for $25.

    Hi-Koala Huggable Portable Speaker

Perfect for children, the Hi-Koala Huggable Portable Speaker may look like a simple stuffed animal, but portable speakers are integrated into the koala's feet for playing music. The arms can also be bent to "hug" the cell phone or MP3 player, amplifying tunes via the standard wired connection. This speaker is conveniently powered by two AA batteries or via a USB connection.

Pricing: The Hi-Koala Huggable Portable Speaker lists for $40.

Two Bluetooth Speakers with Input Ports

Most modern cell phones come with Bluetooth connectivity and having a wireless Bluetooth speaker can be very convenient. Many of wireless speakers also come with a 3.5mm auxiliary jack for a wired connection as well.

    JBL Flip Speaker

Used horizontally or vertically, the versatile JBL Flip is a relatively compact speaker with an easy-to-access auxiliary input jack. This makes it a great wired speaker for any number of cell phones and it comes bundled with a neoprene carrying case for music on the go. As can be expected with smaller speakers, the low-end bass may not be earth shattering, but the rest of the range sounds great for its size.

Pricing: The JBL Flip has a regular price of about $120.

    Bigger Sound in Smaller Packages

Mobile phones are fantastic convergence devices that have effectively combined the functionality of so many separate devices, but their compact size has typically limited both the volume and quality of the sound their speakers are able to produce. Fortunately, many external speaker options are available, with selections in all sizes and price ranges. A wired speaker may be the ideal choice for you, or you may find that you prefer a wireless model or even a cell phone dock. Whatever type of speaker you choose, you're sure to enjoy the larger sound.

  • Which is the best Microsoft Surface laptop or tablet for you?

Microsoft offers five different devices within its Surface portfolio: the Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, Surface Book, Surface Studio, and Surface Go.

Last year saw four updates to the range including a new Surface Studio 2, the Surface Laptop 2, Surface Pro 6 and all-new Surface Go sitting at the bottom of the range - a 10-inch touchscreen tablet for all types of people who work on the go.

Confused about which one might be the one for you? No worries. It's not as complicated as it first seems, and to help you figure out the differences between them all we've compared each of the Surface devices to give you a better idea of which is best for you.

    Quick summary

The Surface Go is a 10-inch touchscreen tablet that, at first look, looks like a smaller Surface Pro, but Microsoft has insisted that it re-engineered the tablet's size, weight, design, and more, in order to make it more portable. Microsoft is targeting Apple iPad users and Chromebook users with this device, as it's the smallest Surface available and the cheapest.

The Surface Pro 6 is a Windows 10 Pro 2-in-1 PC with a detachable keyboard, but it's definitely not for people who want a conventional laptop. It retains the same design as the last couple of generations but the internals have been updated.

The Surface Laptop 2 (which replaced the Surface Laptop) is more expensive than the Surface Pro. It's a traditional clamshell laptop; Microsoft's only Surface device that doesn't have a tablet component.

The Surface Book 2 is a professional-grade laptop available in 13.5 or 15-inch sizes. What makes it stand out, however, is its detachable screen that can act as an independent tablet PC. There's also the option of a discrete GPU. It's bigger and more expensive than the Surface Laptop, but it offers more in terms of performance.

The Surface Studio 2 (replacing the older Surface Studio) is the most expensive Surface device, and it's primarily for creatives. It's a gorgeous all-in-one Windows 10 PC with a Zero Gravity Hinge. With a light push, it can be pushed down to a desk position and then used with the included Surface Pen or even the optional Surface Dial to sketch.

Which Microsoft Surface is best for you?

    Microsoft Surface Go

    • Dimensions: 637.4 x 438.9 x 12.5mm, 522g weight
    • Display: 10-inch PixelSense display; 1800 x 1200 resolution (217dpi), 3:2 aspect ratio
    • Connections: 1 x USB-C, 3.5 mm headphone jack, 1 x Surface Connect port, Surface Type Cover Port, 1 x MicroSDXC Card Reader
    • Battery: Up to 9 hours
    • Accessories: Type Cover, Surface Dial, Microsoft Office, and Surface Pen (all sold separately)

The Surface Go is the entry-level Surface, introduced in mid-2018. It's based around an Intel Pentium Gold processor - so isn't performance-orientated - while there's 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. There's one other model of the Surface Go available, with 8GB of memory alongside 128GB of storage. There's also a USB-C (non-Thunderbolt) port, a Surface Connect port for charging and a micro SD expansion slot under the kickstand.

That built-in kickstand can extend up to 165 degrees, while there's a 5-megapixel HD camera, rear auto-focus 8-megapixel HD camera, support for Wi-Fi and Windows Hello.

Both models work with the £99/$99 Surface Pen and really do need that as well as the also £99/$99 Surface Type Cover.

Surface Go's Type Cover comes in standard black (plastic), or you can get it in Alcantara fabric in the following colours: Burgundy, Cobalt Blue, or Platinum. The Surface Mobile Mouse, which has Bluetooth pairing, also comes in Burgundy, Cobalt Blue, or Platinum.

    Microsoft Surface Pro 6

    • Dimensions: 292 x 201 x 8.5mm, from 775g
    • Display: 12.3-inch PixelSense display; 2,736 x 1,824 resolution (267ppi)
    • Connections: 1x USB 3.0, microSD card reader, Mini DisplayPort, Cover port, Surface Connect, 3.5mm headphone jack
    • Battery: Up to 13.5 hours
    • Accessories: Surface Pen, Signature Type Cover, Surface Dock (all sold separately)

The Surface Pro is a Windows 10 Pro 2-in-1 hybrid laptop. It's not for people who want a conventional laptop.

The latest Surface Pro 6 had an under-the-hood update in 2018, with no external changes from the Surface Pro 5 aside from the fact it's available in black as well as charcoal. There's not even a single USB-C port. We guess we'll have to wait until 2019 for Microsoft to make the change there.  However, you do get the latest generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processors.

Surface Pro works with a detachable Type Cover and Surface Pen, as well as the Surface Dock that transforms it into a desktop PC that can be used with two external monitors, mouse and printer.

    Microsoft Surface Laptop 2

    • Dimensions: 308.1 x 223.27 x 14.48mm, from 1.25kg weight
    • Display: 13.5-inch PixelSense display; 2256 x 1504 resolution (201ppi)
    • Connections: One USB 3.0, Mini DisplayPort, Surface Connect, 3.5mm headphone jack
    • Battery: Up to 14.5 hours
    • Accessories: Surface Arc Mouse, Surface Dock, Surface Dial, Surface Pen (all sold separately)

The new Surface Laptop 2 replaces 2017's Surface Laptop with upgraded internals - the latest Intel Core i5 and i7 processors are on board, just as they are with the new Surface Pro 6. The Surface Laptop 2 does have a bit of flair, offering up an Alcantara fabric keyboard, while there's a new black finish to add to the existing platinum, burgundy and colbalt blue.

The screen is terrific and there's a superb spec sheet, too. However, as with the Surface Pro 6, the Laptop 2 still has no USB-C. This is a bit of a letdown for such an expensive device and we're looking forward to a refinement of the design later this year.

    Microsoft Surface Book 2

    • Dimensions: 312 x 232 x 13mm to 23 mm, from 1.53kg in weight
    • Display: 13.5-inch PixelSense display; 3000 x 2000 resolution (267ppi)
    • Connections: 2 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB Type-C, Full-size SD card reader (SDXC), Mini DisplayPort, Surface Connect, 3.5mm headphone jack
    • Battery: Up to 17 hours
    • Accessories: Surface Pen, Surface Dial, Surface Dock (all sold separately)

The Surface Book 2 succeeds the original Surface Book and it is a 2-in-1 convertible device that's also a professional laptop, thanks to its solid base and a discrete GPU option. It's bigger than the Surface Laptop, but it offers much more in the performance department.

Surface Book 2 is a high-powered, touchscreen laptop that graphics professionals, in particular, will appreciate for work. It's the right Surface for anyone that needs a mobile workhouse that'll last all day, though it isn't cheap.

The base model features the Intel Core i5 processor with dual core performance, Intel HD Graphics 620, 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM, though this is configurable up to the Intel Core i7 processor with quad-core power, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 discrete GPU with 2GB GDDR5 graphics memory, 1TB of SSD and 16GB of RAM. The top end 15-inch model features GeForce GTX 1050 and 1060 graphics plus 1TB of SSD storage.

All models have Windows Hello face authentication, a 5-megapixel front camera, 8-megapixel rear camera, dual microphones and front-facing stereo speakers with Dolby Audio Premium.

    Microsoft Surface Studio 2

    • Price: From $3,499 on Microsoft US
    • Dimensions: 637.4 x 438.9 x 12.5mm (display), 250 x 220 x 32.2 mm (base), 9.56kg weight
    • Display: 28-inch PixelSense display; 4500 x 3000 resolution (192dpi)
    • Connections: 4 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB-C, Full size SD reader (SDXC), Mini DisplayPort, 3.5mm headphone jack
    • Battery: Power cord with grip-release cable
    • Accessories: Surface Pen (included); Surface Dial (sold separately)

The Surface Studio 2 features beefed-up core specs but the same design as the original Surface Studio. It's not a portable machine, instead the Surface Studio is an all-in-one performance PC along the lines of the iMac but with a pivoting display that means the device can almost fold flat on the desk.

There's a solitary USB-C port in this version thankfully (why is Microsoft so down on including USB-C?). There's a seventh-generation Core i7 under the hood this time around but it's the graphics that have been given a serious boost with Nvidia's Pascal-based GTX 1060 and 1070 GPUs featuring 6 or 8GB of GDDR5 memory.

  • Huawei could launch smartphone with own OS this year

Huawei has been testing a smartphone running Hongmeng OS, with a possible plan to launch the device before the end of the year.

The report comes from Chinese state media, Global Times (via Reuters) and adds a little more uncertainty to exactly what Huawei's plans are for its home-baked operating system.

Rather than it be a flagship premium smartphone like the P-series and Mate series devices, this particular phone is rumoured to fit in the budget end of the market.

Its sub-$300 rumoured price point certainly makes it feel a little more experimental than its usual phones, and perhaps indicates less risk if the bet doesn't pay off. Perhaps also indicating that confidence isn't sky high with this in house software.

The Hongmeng OS story is one with many strings, seemingly tangled and leading in various directions, almost certainly because the relationship between the US and China is leaving Huawei in an uncertain position.

Huawei has stated - more than once - that its preference is to continue working with Android and US companies to build its smartphones. After all, it can't hope to compete with the ecosystems of Apple or Google, and would take many years to come close to that level.

More recently, it stated that Hongmeng was originally designed as an operating system for managing its network infrastructure and is ideal for IOT/smart home systems due to its extreme low latency and speed.

In fact, it's been rumoured it could launch in a consumer smart screen first, or smart TV, before it launches in other devices.

It wasn't envisioned as being a platform for smartphones, but with the trade war between the US and China, and Huawei subsequently being unable to work with American companies, it's seemingly forced the manufacturer to start work on its own OS, in case the worst comes to pass and the ban lasts permanently.

One other factor making this plan difficult to follow is the contradictory comments from the White House. One week, the licenses have been restored and things can carry on as normal, and the next week it's flipped and Huawei is yet again unable to work with US companies.

Through this flip-flopping, Huawei has remained fairly tight-lipped, not confirming either way until there's an official permanent solution.
