The on-board speaker on a cell phone can only be so powerful, but external speakers can provide a much larger and fuller sound. Having the right external speaker to go along with a cell phone is a critical decision for any music lover, whether they're listening to tunes at home or taking the jam on the road. Many external speakers feature a standard 3.5mm stereo audio input jack; this can be used to connect the speakers to nearly all contemporary mobile phones the same way you would connect a set of headphones. This universal connectivity means that wired speakers will work with just about any mobile phone.
Four Wired Speakers Home or Office Use
If you
enjoy listening to music stored on your cell phone at home or your office, the
experience will be even more enjoyable when you have a great speaker to amplify
the sound.
Audioengine A5+
The Audioengine A5+ comes as a pair of premium powered speakers to suit a variety of musical styles and genres. Designed to work with a variety of iDevices like the iPhone, as well as with other smartphones, TVs, computers, or any other audio source, the A5+ provides great stereo sound to any room in your home. In addition to the pair of bookshelf speakers, the A5+ also features a remote control and a USB port to keep your smartphone charged while it is playing music through the provided auxiliary input jack.
Pricing: The
black or white versions of the A5+ speakers have a retail price of $399, while
the bamboo version costs $469.
Harman Kardon Soundsticks III
Offering a very unique look, the Soundsticks III from Harman Kardon allow you to "listen to a work of art." Unlike a typical docking station where you get a single unit, the Soundsticks III is a three-component system providing a 2.1 audio configuration. This means you get two stereo speakers, plus one central downward-firing subwoofer, all of which boast a transparent appearance. Each stereo channel has four full-range transducers
Pricing: MSRP
on the Soundsticks III is $170.
M-Audio Studiophile AV 40
Providing a similar studio-like experience for audio aficionados, the M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 compact powered speakers provide a total power output of 40 watts, with 20 watts per channel. The speakers feature four-inch polypropylene-coated woofers and 3/4-inch silk dome tweeters that are ferrofluid-cooled. The magnetic shielding virtually eliminates any interference and the built-in volume dial on the front makes it easy to adjust the sound. Conveniently, the 3.5mm stereo input jack is also located in the front, making it easy to connect your phone.
Pricing: The
retail price on the M-Audio AV 40 is $200.
Edifier
Exclaim e10
If you're looking for a pair of stereo speakers that make a statement, the Edifier Exclaim e10 Bi-Amped 2.0 speaker system could be a fantastic choice. The base of each of the stereo speakers is spherical in shape, containing the main three-inch woofer, while the vertical upper sections contain two one-inch tweeters and a 1x3-inch passive radiator for added sound production. The full integral digital sound processing provides excellent performance for any general of music with a total RMS output of 36 watts.
Pricing: The
Edifier Exclaim e10 is listed at $100.
Five Wired Portable Phone Speakers
The
larger options above are best suited for the home or office, but it is also
possible to carry around a smaller, portable speaker for sharing music on the
go.
GOgroove Pal Bot Portable Android Speaker
Not all
speakers have to be flat boxes or cylindrical towers. The GOgroove Pal Bot is a
portable sound system that takes on the appearance of the Google Android character.
Some people call him Andy and others refer to him as Bugdroid. In any case, the
cute Android robot acts as a full-fledged speaker for your smartphone and it
will even work with iPhones, Windows Phones, and other audio sources. At lower
volumes, the battery can keep the music going for over 24 hours and the
retractable audio cable keeps everything neat and tidy.
Pricing: Whether
you go with the official-looking green or a less conventional blue, the
GOgroove Pal Bot retails for around $40.
Scosche
boomCAN
An extremely affordable speaker that happens to be remarkably small too, the Scosche boomCAN comes in a number of different colors and features a rechargeable battery for up to 7 hours of continuous music playback. It measures less than two inches wide and under 2.5 inches tall, making it one of the smallest portable speakers for cell phones. The aluminum housing is lightweight, while also providing good durability. You can even link together multiple boomCAN speakers via the audio output jack for even bigger sound.
Pricing: The
Scosche boomCAN is available for around $20.
HMDX
Burst Portable Speaker
Available in blue, grey, orange, purple or yellow, the HMDX Burst portable speaker features a convenient, retractable 3.5mm cord for connecting to your music-playing cell phone. The retractable cable is very convenient, as you don't have to bring along a loose audio cable. The rubberized soft exterior provides some protection and the rechargeable battery can last up to six hours.
Pricing:
The HMDX Burst has a list price of just $25.
Go-Anywhere
Mini Speaker
Geared toward people who value a trendy, fashionable appearance, the Go-Anywhere Mini Speaker features a unique vase-like shape and can be used vertically with MP3 players, smartphones or any other audio source via its 3.5mm input jack. It comes in bold colors like pink magenta, orange and pool (aqua).
Pricing: The
Go-Anywhere Mini Speaker retails for $25.
Hi-Koala
Huggable Portable Speaker
Perfect for children, the Hi-Koala Huggable Portable Speaker may look like a simple stuffed animal, but portable speakers are integrated into the koala's feet for playing music. The arms can also be bent to "hug" the cell phone or MP3 player, amplifying tunes via the standard wired connection. This speaker is conveniently powered by two AA batteries or via a USB connection.
Pricing: The
Hi-Koala Huggable Portable Speaker lists for $40.
Two Bluetooth Speakers with Input Ports
Most modern cell phones come with Bluetooth connectivity and having a wireless Bluetooth speaker can be very convenient. Many of wireless speakers also come with a 3.5mm auxiliary jack for a wired connection as well.
JBL Flip
Speaker
Used horizontally or vertically, the versatile JBL Flip is a relatively compact speaker with an easy-to-access auxiliary input jack. This makes it a great wired speaker for any number of cell phones and it comes bundled with a neoprene carrying case for music on the go. As can be expected with smaller speakers, the low-end bass may not be earth shattering, but the rest of the range sounds great for its size.
Pricing: The
JBL Flip has a regular price of about $120.
Bigger Sound in Smaller Packages
Mobile
phones are fantastic convergence devices that have effectively combined the
functionality of so many separate devices, but their compact size has typically
limited both the volume and quality of the sound their speakers are able to
produce. Fortunately, many external speaker options are available, with
selections in all sizes and price ranges. A wired speaker may be the ideal
choice for you, or you may find that you prefer a wireless model or even a cell
phone dock. Whatever type of speaker you choose, you're sure to enjoy the
larger sound.

Microsoft offers five different devices within its Surface portfolio:
the Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, Surface Book, Surface Studio, and Surface Go.
Last year saw four updates to the range including a new Surface Studio
2, the Surface Laptop 2, Surface Pro 6 and all-new Surface Go sitting at
the bottom of the range - a 10-inch touchscreen tablet for all types of people
who work on the go.
Confused about which one might be the one for you? No worries. It's not
as complicated as it first seems, and to help you figure out the differences
between them all we've compared each of the Surface devices to give you a
better idea of which is best for you.
Quick summary
The Surface Go is a 10-inch touchscreen tablet that, at first look, looks like a smaller Surface Pro, but Microsoft has insisted that it re-engineered the tablet's size, weight, design, and more, in order to make it more portable. Microsoft is targeting Apple iPad users and Chromebook users with this device, as it's the smallest Surface available and the cheapest.
The Surface Pro 6 is a Windows 10 Pro 2-in-1 PC with a detachable keyboard, but it's definitely not for people who want a conventional laptop. It retains the same design as the last couple of generations but the internals have been updated.
The Surface Laptop 2 (which replaced the Surface Laptop) is more expensive than the Surface Pro. It's a traditional clamshell laptop; Microsoft's only Surface device that doesn't have a tablet component.
The Surface Book 2 is a professional-grade laptop available in 13.5 or 15-inch sizes. What makes it stand out, however, is its detachable screen that can act as an independent tablet PC. There's also the option of a discrete GPU. It's bigger and more expensive than the Surface Laptop, but it offers more in terms of performance.
The Surface Studio 2 (replacing the older Surface Studio) is the most expensive Surface device, and it's primarily for creatives. It's a gorgeous all-in-one Windows 10 PC with a Zero Gravity Hinge. With a light push, it can be pushed down to a desk position and then used with the included Surface Pen or even the optional Surface Dial to sketch.

Microsoft Surface is best for you?
Microsoft
Surface Go
Dimensions: 637.4 x 438.9 x
12.5mm, 522g weight
Display: 10-inch
PixelSense display; 1800 x 1200 resolution (217dpi), 3:2 aspect ratio

Battery: Up to 9 hours
Accessories: Type Cover,
Surface Dial, Microsoft Office, and Surface Pen (all sold separately)
The Surface Go is the entry-level Surface, introduced in
mid-2018. It's based around an Intel Pentium Gold processor - so isn't
performance-orientated - while there's 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. There's
one other model of the Surface Go available, with 8GB of memory alongside 128GB
of storage. There's also a USB-C (non-Thunderbolt) port, a Surface Connect port
for charging and a micro SD expansion slot under the kickstand.
That built-in kickstand can extend up to 165 degrees, while
there's a 5-megapixel HD camera, rear auto-focus 8-megapixel HD camera, support
for Wi-Fi and Windows Hello.
Both models work with the £99/$99 Surface Pen and really do
need that as well as the also £99/$99 Surface Type Cover.
Surface Go's Type Cover comes in standard black (plastic), or
you can get it in Alcantara fabric in the following colours: Burgundy, Cobalt
Blue, or Platinum. The Surface Mobile Mouse, which has Bluetooth pairing, also
comes in Burgundy, Cobalt Blue, or Platinum.
Microsoft
Surface Pro 6
Dimensions: 292 x 201 x
8.5mm, from 775g
Display: 12.3-inch
PixelSense display; 2,736 x 1,824 resolution (267ppi)
Connections: 1x USB 3.0,
microSD card reader, Mini DisplayPort, Cover port, Surface Connect, 3.5mm
headphone jack
Battery: Up to 13.5 hours
Accessories: Surface Pen,
Signature Type Cover, Surface Dock (all sold separately)
The Surface Pro is a Windows 10 Pro 2-in-1 hybrid laptop.
It's not for people who want a conventional laptop.
The latest Surface Pro 6 had an under-the-hood update in 2018, with no external changes from the Surface Pro 5 aside from the fact it's available in black as well as charcoal. There's not even a single USB-C port. We guess we'll have to wait until 2019 for Microsoft to make the change there. However, you do get the latest generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processors.
Surface Pro works with a detachable Type Cover and Surface
Pen, as well as the Surface Dock that transforms it into a desktop PC that can
be used with two external monitors, mouse and printer.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 2
Dimensions: 308.1 x 223.27 x
14.48mm, from 1.25kg weight
Display: 13.5-inch
PixelSense display; 2256 x 1504 resolution (201ppi)
Connections: One USB 3.0,
Mini DisplayPort, Surface Connect, 3.5mm headphone jack
The new Surface Laptop 2 replaces 2017's Surface Laptop with
upgraded internals - the latest Intel Core i5 and i7 processors are on board,
just as they are with the new Surface Pro 6. The Surface Laptop 2 does have a
bit of flair, offering up an Alcantara fabric keyboard, while there's a new
black finish to add to the existing platinum, burgundy and colbalt
blue.
The screen is terrific and there's a superb spec sheet, too.
However, as with the Surface Pro 6, the Laptop 2 still has no USB-C. This is a
bit of a letdown for such an expensive device and we're looking forward to a
refinement of the design later this year.
Microsoft
Surface Book 2
Dimensions: 312 x 232 x 13mm
to 23 mm, from 1.53kg in weight
Display: 13.5-inch
PixelSense display; 3000 x 2000 resolution (267ppi)
Connections: 2 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB
Type-C, Full-size SD card reader (SDXC), Mini DisplayPort, Surface
Connect, 3.5mm headphone jack
Battery: Up to 17 hours
Accessories: Surface Pen,
Surface Dial, Surface Dock (all sold separately)
The Surface Book 2 succeeds the original Surface Book and it
is a 2-in-1 convertible device that's also a professional laptop, thanks to its
solid base and a discrete GPU option. It's bigger than the Surface Laptop, but
it offers much more in the performance department.
Surface Book 2 is a high-powered, touchscreen laptop that
graphics professionals, in particular, will appreciate for work. It's the right
Surface for anyone that needs a mobile workhouse that'll last all day, though
it isn't cheap.
The base model features the Intel Core i5 processor with dual
core performance, Intel HD Graphics 620, 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM, though this
is configurable up to the Intel Core i7 processor with quad-core power, Nvidia
GeForce GTX 1050 discrete GPU with 2GB GDDR5 graphics memory, 1TB of SSD and
16GB of RAM. The top end 15-inch model features GeForce GTX 1050 and 1060
graphics plus 1TB of SSD storage.
All models have Windows Hello face authentication, a
5-megapixel front camera, 8-megapixel rear camera, dual microphones and
front-facing stereo speakers with Dolby Audio Premium.
Microsoft
Surface Studio 2
Price: From $3,499 on
Microsoft US
Dimensions: 637.4 x 438.9 x
12.5mm (display), 250 x 220 x 32.2 mm (base), 9.56kg weight
Display: 28-inch
PixelSense display; 4500 x 3000 resolution (192dpi)
Connections: 4 x USB 3.0, 1 x
USB-C, Full size SD reader (SDXC), Mini DisplayPort, 3.5mm headphone jack
The Surface Studio 2 features beefed-up core specs but the
same design as the original Surface Studio. It's not a portable machine,
instead the Surface Studio is an all-in-one performance PC along the lines of
the iMac but with a pivoting display that means the device can almost fold flat
on the desk.
There's a solitary USB-C port in this version thankfully (why
is Microsoft so down on including USB-C?). There's a seventh-generation Core i7
under the hood this time around but it's the graphics that have been given a serious
boost with Nvidia's Pascal-based GTX 1060 and 1070 GPUs featuring 6 or 8GB of
GDDR5 memory.
Huawei has been testing a smartphone running Hongmeng OS, with a possible plan to launch the device before the end of the year.
The report comes from Chinese state media, Global Times (via Reuters) and adds a little more uncertainty to exactly what Huawei's plans are for its home-baked operating system.
Rather than it be a flagship premium smartphone like the P-series and
Mate series devices, this particular phone is rumoured to fit in the budget end
of the market.
Its sub-$300 rumoured price point certainly makes it feel a little more
experimental than its usual phones, and perhaps indicates less risk if the bet
doesn't pay off. Perhaps also indicating that confidence isn't sky high with
this in house software.
The Hongmeng OS story is one with many strings, seemingly tangled and leading in various directions, almost certainly because the relationship between the US and China is leaving Huawei in an uncertain position.
Huawei has stated - more than once - that its preference is to continue working with Android and US companies to build its smartphones. After all, it can't hope to compete with the ecosystems of Apple or Google, and would take many years to come close to that level.
More recently, it stated that Hongmeng was originally designed as an
operating system for managing its network infrastructure and is ideal for
IOT/smart home systems due to its extreme low latency and speed.
In fact, it's been rumoured it could launch in a consumer smart screen first, or smart TV, before it launches in other devices.
It wasn't envisioned as being a platform for smartphones, but with the
trade war between the US and China, and Huawei subsequently being unable to
work with American companies, it's seemingly forced the manufacturer to start
work on its own OS, in case the worst comes to pass and the ban lasts
permanently.
One other factor making this plan difficult to follow is the
contradictory comments from the White House. One week, the licenses have been
restored and things can carry on as normal, and the next week it's flipped and
Huawei is yet again unable to work with US companies.
Through this flip-flopping, Huawei has remained fairly tight-lipped, not confirming either way until there's an official permanent solution.

One day a child may ask you who invented LEGOs, and now you can be equipped to answer, thanks to the information found below on Mr. Ole Kirk Christiansen, also known as the forefather of LEGOs.
Who
Invented LEGOs?
LEGOs are quite possibly one of the most popular and best-selling toys on the planet. From the classic colored bricks that form houses and shops, to the preschool-friendly Duplo and preteen- intriguing Bionicles, LEGOs continue to impress and amuse new generations of children. However, how exactly did they get their start? In other words, who invented LEGOs?
The answer is found in a man named Ole Kirk Christiansen, who
invented today's recognizable LEGO brick in the late 1940s.
About
Ole Kirk Christiansen
Beginning his carpentry career in 1916, Christiansen built
houses and furniture for local farmers. Hailing from Denmark, his business was
based there. In the 1930s, he decided to branch out and make toys out of wood
for the local children, and these included pull toys and piggy banks. He found
he had such a passion and joy in his heart for children's items that he left
carpentry and went into the toy business full time. At the time, Denmark was
experiencing a depression, and while furniture sales were suffering, the toy
market was far from declining.
He selected the name LEGO out of two Danish words that mean
"to play well", and the popularity of his new toy was soon found all
over Denmark. He created the first plastic bricks in 1946 and labeled them
"automatic binding bricks". Originally manufactured in only red and
white plastic, the first LEGO set hit toy store shelves in 1955 and was called
"Town Plan". It doubled as a creative way to teach children the
importance of neighborhood and traffic safety, and the kids bought into the
concept. Learning and playing came hand in hand as LEGO sets flew off of
shelves. Christiansen continued to come up with new sets of LEGOs that would
remain consistent in teaching children important life lessons. This passion and
love for children lasted until he passed away. The company is now run by Kjeld
Kirk Kristiansen, who is the grandson of the great LEGO founder.
LEGOs
Today
In asking who invents new LEGOs today, the answer is found in
large teams of manufacturers, designers, conceptualists and marketing
professionals who study what kids want and are interested in, thus working
those discoveries into the world of LEGO.
Today LEGOs are available in over 3,000 varieties of pieces, and
come in 75 different colors. This is a far cry from the original red and white
basic brick set, and exemplifies the LEGO company's continued desire to
improve, invent and innovate.
Today over 400 million kids, teens and adults have enjoyed LEGOs, and over 400 billion bricks have been produced over the company's many decades in business. The soaring popularity continues today as new generations discover these adorable and innovative little bricks that open up a whole new world of imagination. You can visit LEGO's official site for more information.
For
Adults
Another version of LEGOs has been invented in recent years. It's known as LEGO SeriousPlayand is designed to help professional adults problem solve and experience improvements in business performance. Now not only children are invited into the world of LEGOs, as the company continues to find new ways to invent and explore every aspect of life with their creative brick building.

Each of these four speakers is completely waterproof. They are fully submersible and can be dunked under water (up to a full meter) for up to 30 minutes. They also offer wireless Bluetoothcapabilities.
1.
Scosche boomBOTTLE H2O
This portable waterproof Bluetooth speaker is perfect for those who enjoy active, outdoor fun when conditions may be wet - or even snowy. The device's exterior is made to be a non-slip surface. It is designed to float if dropped into the water. The speaker's cylindrical shape will fit snugly inside most water bottle cages, which is why Stuff.tv named it as a top five gear item for cyclists. It also fits in most cup holders and comes with a carabiner clip, making the device equally well-suited for hikers, backpackers, boaters, swimmers and others who enjoy all-weather, rugged fun.
Features
The speaker is designed for multi-directional sound, for the listening enjoyment of everyone in your group.
The device's sound is produced by a 50mm up-firing speaker paired with a passive subwoofer.
The speaker will play music for up to eight hours continuously when fully charged.
It has integrated controls that allow users to easily adjust the volume, start or stop sound and advance tracks forward or go backwards.
A cnet review describes it as a "pretty decent little wireless speaker that's travel-friendly and repels water," but points out that the sound can be a bit compromised when playing bass-heavy music at a high volume.
An auxiliary audio cable is included with the device, as is a micro USB charging cable.
This unit does not have hands-free calling capabilities.
2. Braven BRV-1
If you're looking for a heavy-duty rugged portable speaker that also offers additional capabilities, the Braven BRV-1 might be exactly what you need. Ranked as 2014's best rugged Bluetooth speaker by TomsGuide.com and recommended by Macworld as one of the top "rugged Bluetooth speakers for travel and outdoor use," this small yet tough speaker is a great option for outdoor use in extreme weather conditions.
Features
The speaker has a 70 mm subwoofer and produces sound at three watts per channel.
DigitalTrends.com praises the sound quality, describing it as having "good balance" as well as "full low end" and "clear midrange and treble."
It will play music for up to 12 hours when the battery is fully charged.
You can plug your cell phone into this device using a USB cable to charge it while on the go.
You can adjust the music volume and advance or reverse tracks directly from the speaker.
A micro USB charging cable is included with the device.
The speaker has a line-in so you can use it with devices that do not have Bluetooth capabilities.
It has a connector designed to make it easy to attach the device to a lanyard for easy carrying.
The speaker has an indicator light so you can easily tell how much battery power is remaining.
The exterior is rubberized to provide maximum shock absorption.
This unit has hands-free calling capabilities.
3. BOOM SWIMMER
If you're looking for a smaller waterproof Bluetooth speaker, BOOM SWIMMER, which was named by iPhoneLife.com as one of 2013's best rugged speakers, is a great option. The speaker actually has a removable flexible 'tail' that you can use to attach it to many kinds of surfaces, making it ideally designed for use in the shower or during any outdoor activity where you might be exposed to water. For example, you can loop the speaker's tail around a chain link fence, snake it around your showerhead or twist it around a strap on your backpack. It also has a built-in suction cup that can be attached to any flat surface that has a smooth finish.
Features
The speaker is dust-proof and shock-proof, making it a sturdy choice for outdoor activities.
When fully charged, the speaker will play music for up to 16 hours continuously, depending on how loud you are playing the music. The maximum playing time for full volume usage is eight hours.
A TechnologyTell.com review praises the sound quality, saying "You can actually feel the music coming from within" the speaker, indicating that the unit sounds best when hanging by its tail and that the quality diminishes at very high volumes.
PCMag.com equates the sound quality to other relatively inexpensive Bluetooth speakers, but recommends it as "a reliable portable option" due to its "useful, waterproof design."
This unit does not have hands-free calling capabilities.
4. ECOXGEAR: ECOXPRO
If you're going to be playing in or on the water for an extended period of time the ECOXPRO audio case is a great option for enjoying music while also protecting your phone. This waterproof speaker case is ideally suited for activities like canoeing, rafting, tubing, boating and more, facts that contribute to its perfect 5-star rating on Cabelas.com.
Most smartphones fit snugly inside the case (though if you have a bulky case on your phone, you may need to remove it first). Use the attached audio cable to plug your phone into the speaker, add other items you want to protect (such as a key, credit card, cash, etc.) and snap it closed for the ultimate water protection. Toss the compact box in your backpack and you're ready for an outdoor adventure.
Features
The speaker requires two AA batteries (which do not come with the unit).
It will play music for up to 30 hours on fully charged batteries, though playing at high volumes can decrease battery life.
A GadgetReview.com review indicates that the speaker has strong sound even when wet, even though it is a monophonic speaker.
It comes with a removable carabiner clip.
It has a pressure-relief valve that makes the case easy to open regardless of altitude.
The unit is designed to be shock resistant.
It has a built-in waterproof headphone jack.
The largest phone size the case will accommodate is 3.125 X 6.125.
You will not be able to answer your phone while it is locked away in the case.
Great Music Without Water Worries
Any of these speakers make it easy to enjoy
your favorite tunes while engaging in outdoor activities - and these are just a
few of the many available options. Don't let a little water keep you from
listening to the sounds you love while getting outdoors and staying active,
even if your choice of activities takes you near - or even on - the water.
Chose the model that best meets your needs and you'll be on your way to many
moments of outdoor listening enjoyment.
Long before Apple announced Screen Time - a feature of iOS 12 - a small British company called Screen Time Labs offered a solution to managing children and their devices.
Called Screen Time (an uncomfortable coincidence, but reassuringly relevant), it's an app available for Android, iOS and Amazon Fire devices that offers parental controls.
We've been living with Screen Time over the past year to see how it can help manage children and their devices.
How does Screen Time work?
Screen Time is composed of a parent app and a child app. The
parent installs the app on their device and sets up an account, before
installing the app on the child's device (or devices). Once installed, the
parent logs into the account on the child's device and then has control. The
child can't uninstall or bypass the app.
Using the parent app, it's then possible to control the
activity of the child device, including time restrictions, app blocking, while
monitoring search history and providing usage statistics for apps (some
features are Android only).
You can install it on multiple devices and you can control it
from multiple parent devices too, which makes it easy to manage in a family
unit.
Screen Time offers a basic (free) subscription and an
enhanced Premium offering at £3.99 a month, which includes up to five devices
and allows a whole lot more functionality.
Additional features then include geolocation - so you can see
where a device is - and more recently web filtering, although these both come
at increased cost.
It's worth noting that Android allow more controls through the app than Applewill, so the experience for an Android phone is better than you get on iOS.
Making
time limits a doddle
One of the big issues surrounding parenting and devices these days is screen time - the amount of time that children are spending in front of some sort of display.
Screen Time will allow you to set limits for devices. This
can be a simple thing like setting bed time - hours between which apps cannot
be used - or limiting the time that a device can be used in total - or both.
That means you can set it so that between 9pm and 7am, a device cannot be used.
With separate usage limits, you can have a rule that says a
device can only be used for, say, 2 hours a day.
You can make exceptions to these rules, however. Send your
child to a sleepover and you might want them to have the ability to phone you
and message you at any time. You might agree that allowing the camera is fun,
but unlimited YouTube access is not. Access to things like calendar or school
homework apps might be necessary, and then can be excluded from time
limits.
New
apps get automatically blocked
Using the app blocker you get control over the apps that a
child can access. That means you have to individually approve those apps,
giving you the chance to see if they are appropriate.
That means that if you decide that WhatsApp isn't
appropriate, you can block it and your child won't be able to use it. This
doesn't block any access to app stores - they can still search and install,
just won't be able to open the app.
The great thing is that new app installs are blocked by
default and you'll get an alert to tell you what has been installed. By equal
measure, if you allow an app and then hear something about it that you don't
like, you can remotely block it.
Ultimately app blocking means that you know what's on the
phone and it promotes conversation about apps and services. Note that it
doesn't restrict the content of an app - so if you allow Netflix, you'd have to
engage separate controls to limit the content, for example.
Cross-platform simplicity
If you've got a number of children on different types of
device, then Screen Time Labs' solution is useful: as it supports Apple,
Android and Fire tablets, you can use the one app for controlling multiple
devices.
That not only gives you a level playing field - really handy
for managing several children - but means you don't have to be changing things
on different devices all the time. All the control stays on your device, so
it's simple.
We've used it across Android and Fire tablets and found that to be really handy. Fire tablets offer a wide range of parental controls anyway - so arguably you don't need Screen Time from a content point of view if using Fire for Kids - but being able to have the same system of time limit, task setting and reward is really handy.
Rewarding
tasks with screen time
Sometimes when you call your kids for dinner you get no
response. You can shout and shout and you get nothing. Open up Screen Time and
pause all the phones in the house and you'll get a response.
But there's another good feature that Screen Time offers and
that's task and reward. If your child runs out of time, then can ask for more
in return for completing tasks - home work, room tidying, whatever it might be.
Again, we've found this really useful to break the cycle of
being locked into a device and battling over whether they can continue playing
or not. When the time runs out, it runs out. It's then within your power to grant
more, so you keep control.
Should
you get Screen Time?
Screen Time isn't the silver bullet to parental controls. The
emphasis still very much lies in parents having control of their children and
their device use - but it's a useful tool in management.
There's a cost involved and at the premium level we think
it's fair. You get a range of functions for £3.99 a month and we've found those
really useful. But it doesn't go as far as spying on messages, for example.
When it comes to things like cyberbullying, knowing what's happening in a child's digital life is important and no app will do that for you. As a parent, it's still your responsibility to make sure your child isn't sending or receiving inappropriate messages and physical intervention has to be an accepted part of digital parenting.
Of course you should use the full range of parental controls that your device already offers. That may will include some levels of control for content (Screen Time won't control the content your child can access on YouTube, for example, it would only block the app if you wanted to) and through existing parental controls you might be able to do some of the things you're being asked to pay for here.
Certainly, Screen Time feels like it has added a level of
control that devices don't naturally have. It means that children aren't free
to roam far and wide through a device and discover everything that the online
world offers, but at the same time it doesn't lock things down and totally
destroy the experience.
Importantly, it establishes a principle of control and
responsibility; while the world is worrying about how much time kids are
spending on devices, you can control it with a few taps.
