The Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite program wasn't just designed for acquiring correct directions to a particular location. It can also be used to track the location of devices and loved ones when you sign up for the appropriate service.

AccuTracking

 AccuTracking offers a pay-as-you-go service for real-time GPS tracking. There is no contract to sign, and the service works with either GPS tracking devices, like those that may be installed on vehicles, or with a compatible cell phone. You can track the location of your cell phone from a PC or a mobile browser, including a full 30-day history with a trail view. The tracking data can also be downloaded in Microsoft Excel (CSV) or Google Earth (KML) file formats.

Monthly pricing starts from around $6 per unit with a seven-day free trial.

 Carrier-Based Location Tracking

 Some major cellular service providers in the United States offer location-based tracking for their mobile customers. These services typically use a combination of GPS tracking and tracking via cell phone signal based on tower locations.

• AT&T FamilyMap: Geared mostly toward parents who want to keep track of their children, AT&T's service costs around $10 per month to locate up to 10 lines.  Android Device Manager

 If you have an Android smartphone, like a Samsung Galaxy or a Google Pixel, then you have access to the Android Device Manager for free. This connects to your existing Google account, the same one you would have used to set up your Android phone in the first place.

1. Go to the Find My Device in a web browser on your computer and log into your Google account.
2. Select your Android device from the ones connected to your account near the top-left corner.
3. The website will then attempt to contact your device.
4. If successful, you will be a shown a map with the last known location of your Android phone, as well as its last known battery level and if it is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
5. Also from this page, you can choose to "play sound" even if the phone is set to silent, "lock" the device, or to "erase" all content from it.

Find My iPhone (iCloud)

 The Find My iPhone feature from Apple works in a very similar manner and comes at no additional cost if you already have an iCloud account. You must first enable this featurethrough the settings menu on your iPhone.

1. From a web browser on your computer, navigate to the Find My iPhone page on iCloud.com. You can also use the Find My iPhone app on a different iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
2. Log in using your Apple ID and password.
3. Select a connected device to view its current location on a map. If you have Family Sharing, any member of the family can locate the missing device for another family member.
4. Like Android Device Manager, you are also afforded additional options like remotely locking or erasing your device.

 Btracking

Geared more toward employers and professional contexts, Btracking requires a paid subscription for every device you would like to track. The service includes access to a cloud-based, real-time mapping platform, a heat map for frequently visited locations, up to six months of routing history, real time alerts delivered by text message or email, and Salesforce CRM integration.

Cell phone tracking costs $15 per month per device for up to 50 devices.

 Device Tracker Plus

 Device Tracker Plus installs onto existing mobile devices to allow you to track the exact location at any time and in real time. This works globally, even where the device does not have cell phone reception. Device Tracker Plus also supports a feature called Virtual Barrier. You can draw a "barrier" around a location and be alerted whenever the tracked cell phone leaves the defined barrier zone.

Monthly pricing starts around $15 to track a single device or about $20 for families who wish to track up to 10 devices.

Legal Considerations and Limitations

 With the noted exceptions of parents tracking their children, law enforcement personnel with a valid court order, and caretakers tracking elderly patients with dementia, it is generally illegal to access someone's computer (and a smartphone is a computer in this context) without their consent. For several of these GPS tracking options, specific software must be installed or enabled on the smartphone before the device can be tracked. The owner of the phone must authorize this feature.

GPS tracking typically requires a relatively good "line of sight" to GPS satellites and thus may work poorly (or not at all) while inside buildings or otherwise obstructed by other physical barriers. The data you receive from tracking solutions may not necessarily be 100 percent accurate and up-to-date.

 To Pay or Not to Pay

 Paid tracking options may be able to provide more accurate and timely results as well as more advanced features. Thus, they may be more desirable for concerned families. If you're simply worried about losing your phone or having it stolen, however, Android Device Manager or Find My iPhone may be perfectly adequate.

Libratone Zipp

The Libratone Zipp is a total rework of the original speaker that dates back to 2012. The new quirky zip-up design is fun, while the physical size - which perhaps makes it a bit too large to cart around outside of the house - lends well to stomping bass and audio output.

That's the rub of it really: for a touch more than many smaller portable competitors, the Zipp gives an extra wallop of sound. If you're after an at-home portable speaker then Libratone seems to have things neatly zipped-up here. And there's now a Zipp 2, too. 

Ruark Audio MRx

If you're after great sound, plenty of connectivity and a pleasing design then look no further. It isn't the cheapest though - £399 in the UK - so it is a premium choice wedged in a competitive market between cheaper wireless speakers below £200 and even more high-end offerings such as the Devialet and Naim line-ups below. The RotoDial control won't be to everyone's taste but the Ruark will win over prospective buyers with its sound quality. Bass isn't overpowering and the soundscape wonderfully wide. 

Devialet Gold Phantom

The thing about the Devialet Gold Phantom is that for most people, the slightly more affordable and lower-spec models in range will make better sense. And we think the silver and white finishes actually look better than the Gold's coppery-gold side panelling. The setup is laborious too.

Once settled in though, the futuristic-looking Phantom is a simply stunning speaker experience - for both the ears and the eyes. Living with a pair has made us want to keep them forever. At their best, a pair of Gold Phantom speakers delivers that rare, emotive kind of music reproduction. It's like liquid, audible gold... but about as expensive too.

Naim Mu-so Qb

We'd not call the Qb a budget speaker by any means, but its price point is about as low as we thought we'd ever see from the Naim, um, name. If you're looking for high-quality audio at a smaller size and price compared to the original Mu-so then the Qb certainly makes a strong impression.

In terms of aesthetics and design it's second-to-none, with audio as cutting as those stand-out industrial looks. For a speaker so square the Qb is an all-round success.

Sonos Play:1

The Play:1 is a great little speaker than has so much potential beyond the speaker itself that we can't recommend it enough as a starting place to embrace the Sonos system. It doesn't sound as good as the Play:3 but then this is a different proposition. This is about getting the most out of your digital streaming music service without spending a fortune in doing so. 

Buy someone one of these and they'll be going back a couple of weeks later to set up another one in another room. Expect music in your house to multiply very quickly and for good reason: the Sonos Play:1 is great. See also the Sonos One with Amazon Alexa. 

Naim Mu-so

The Naim Mu-so is one seriously standout wireless speaker. Sure, its £895 price tag is going to deter its fullest possible audience, but the Mu-so is so good it's worth saving up for. The industrial design aesthetic mirrors some of Naim's higher-end Hi-Fi products and sound is sonically sensational whatever tracks you happen to throw at it.

It's a wonder why it took Naim so many years to create a wireless speaker, because the Mu-so is a stormer, as is the Mu-so Qb, its smaller and newer sibling. The larger Mu-so is one great-looking, great-sounding product with plenty of input sources and a decent app to boot. Hear it and believe: the Mu-so is the new-wave Hi-Fi for the 21st century.

Sonos Play:5

Sonos has a fantastic track record in delivering great speakers - and the 2015 Play:5 sets yet another precedent. It has a subtle yet sophisticated design that we love, offers a brilliant app to connect to streaming services and all your music, among other great features such as capacitive touch controls.

More importantly, however, the sound it delivers is superb, especially with Trueplay software tuning. Yes it's slightly bass biased and there's no Hi-Res support but the Play:5 is fantastic all-around. Sonos has competition nipping at its heels left, right and centre, but the Play:5 shows what over a decade of experience can deliver. The Roborock S6 matches high specifications with a keen price

This means that along with doing the cleaning - which is what you want it for, right? - it has a bunch of other features. You can easily create virtual barriers and no-go areas. Some vacuums require magnetic strips to be inserted under carpets, for instance, but here you can set off-limits areas to protect a delicate vase or a whole room.

Wet and Dry cleaning

Set the S6 going and the cleaning is excellent, thanks to the way it can brush the floors to clean away dust. That's a pretty standard feature, though the fact that the side brush has variable speeds already sets the Roborock S6 above many rivals. It means it can clean snugly into the edges of rooms.

However, this vacuum additionally has a mop unit so it can mop the floor at the same time. This is no mean feat: it works well because the water flow is carefully controlled and the mop pad wipes the floor dry, cleaning up minor marks as it does. Disposable cloths mean it's a doddle to use, too. 

It's powerful - but still gentle

The Roborock S6 doesn't just vacuum up dust. It's powerful enough to pick up AA batteries and pet hair from wooden floors as well as sucking dirt out of carpets. What's more, thanks to a ingenious system for routing air through the device, the suction stays pretty constant through its activities.
